Explain the concept of Diversity (including definition, antecedents, and attributes). 2. Analyze conditions which place a patient at risk for cultural incompetence. 3. Identify when cultural incompetence (negative consequence) is developing or has developed. 4. Discuss exemplars of common diversity disorders. 5. Apply the nursing process (including collaborative interventions) for individuals experiencing cultural incompetence. Concept Analysis Diagram Note: Diagram on separate page. Explanation of Diversity Diagram: If the antecedents are satisfactory then optimal expressions of diversity in healthcare occurs as indicated by the attributes of shared beliefs, values and behaviors. If Diversity is not functioning properly, the negative consequences of stress, culture specific illness, and breakdown of communication occur, which requires intervention. Before intervention can be implemented, the negative consequence must be linked to the related antecedent and identified as ineffective. When this is done, an appropriate intervention can be made. Whether the patient has positive or negative consequences, the impact of the interrelated consequences of Coping, Communication, Interpersonal Relationships, Patient-Centered Care, and Patient Education, vary, depending on the individual patient.
