PANITZALIBRARY INFORMATION LITERACY REPORT 2014/2015 Academic Year The diverse background of all students enrolled at AUBG calls for the need of training and instruction on the Library’s resources and services. Panitza Library has adopted and is following the standards and guidelines of the Association of College and Research Libraries for information literacy instruction. Through this program, we teach Library patrons to be able to complete the following information-related tasks: Identify – define the need of information Find – locate, access, and retrieve the information from a variety of print and electronic sources Evaluate – assess the credibility, currency, reliability, validity, and appropriateness of the information retrieved Organize – compile the information so it can be used to meet the information need Communicate – use the information legally and ethically In 2014/2015 academic year, the Information Literacy program continued to be one of the priorities for AUBG Library and the University as a whole. Panitza Library kept sustainable the collaboration with faculty for the improvement of the program as a whole and the disciplinespecific instructions in particular to ensure that information skills are taught as part of the curriculum and that students exploit effectively the Library’s collections and services. New libGuides and video tutorials were posted on the Library’s website for the further improvement of these skills. All Library educational programs give students a solid foundation for improvement of their information literacy skills, good reading habits, and opportunities for professional development. Last academic year AUBG Library offered the following types of information literacy instruction: 1. Orientation Trainings – designed for: 1.1. freshmen, 1.2. EMBA students, 1.3. faculty, 1.4. staff, and 1.5. non-AUBG visitors 1 2. In-Class Trainings – tailored to the purposes of the ENG102 classes 3. Online Trainings – tailored to support the in-class trainings of the ENG102 classes through the use of an online platform 4. Discipline-Specific Library Instruction – tailored to the specific needs of the higher-level courses 5. Individual Trainings ORIENTATION TRAININGS Most of the orientation trainings are offered at the beginning of (mainly for the freshmen, EMBA students, and faculty) or during the academic year (mainly for the staff and non-AUBG visitors). They cover introduction to the Library’s rules and regulations, policies and procedures, knowledge of Library’s web page, basic catalog search techniques, locating books and periodicals on the shelves, reading LC call numbers, basic knowledge of databases, and introduction to the facilities of the Library. In 2014/2015 academic year, we conducted 25 such trainings (14 in the Fall and 11 in the Spring semester) with 343 students trained. IN-CLASS TRAININGS These trainings are integrated within the ENG102 classes. They include a detailed instruction on the steps of the research process: identifying and developing a topic, finding background information, books, periodical articles (print and electronic) and Internet resources, evaluation of those sources, and citation. In 2014/2015 academic year, we conducted 14 such trainings (3 in the Fall and 11 in the Spring semester) with 275 students trained. ONLINE TRAININGS In addition to the in-class trainings and to keep up with the newest trends in teaching, we continued to incorporate the online platform for blended learning called Imagine Easy Academy. The platform is embedded in the Blackboard Learn module of the ENG102 classes so that students can use it anytime anywhere. With well-designed content that is frequently updated, the platform effectively teaches students all the steps of the research process. Using it, we are able to develop and strengthen students’ analytical critical thinking skills with standards-aligned, subject-specific content and practice. In 2014/2015 academic year, there were 275 students online trained. DISCIPLINE-SPECIFIC LIBRARY INSTRUCTION The target group for this type of instruction is students who have taken a decision on a major study program. Those students understand the need for more specific subject-oriented searches within the databases. They are taught special concepts and techniques and how to conduct advanced searches in the databases. In 2014/2015 academic year, we conducted 20 such trainings (12 in the Fall and 8 in the Spring semester) with 444 students trained. INDIVIDUAL TRAININGS These are extra, mainly individual, trainings for students and faculty who need additional training on various topics related to the Library’s resources and services. They are generally 2 held in Panitza Library. In 2014/2015 academic year, we conducted 6 such trainings (4 in the Fall and 2 in the Spring semester) with 6 students trained. All in all, through our program we motivate AUBG students to become information literate and life-long learning members of the society. This is evident by the number of trainings conducted in 2014/2015 academic year. The total students trained were 1,068 and the total sessions were 66. Therefore, we believe that last academic year was a very productive one.
