A652 Spoken Language Study (controlled assessment)

Year 10 (V Form) Autumn Term (2)

The lead text used for the controlled assessment will be the episode of News Round from 2010: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMnTgbIpm3c 0.00-0.32; 2.30-3.21; 7.29-end

However, these will be compared to an episode from 1982: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUEZvnbYq54&feature=related . 0.00-0.52; 6.28-7.16; 8.08- end

Students may also make reference to ‘adult’ news programmes, principally a recent episode of the

BBC News: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qEjDjtujaQ

The controlled assessment task is to be set by the centre. The proposed task is therefore as follows:

Focusing mainly on ‘News Round’, explore the methods that producers and presenters of TV news programmes use to communicate to their audiences

Week 1:

Intro to controlled assessment: task, assessment objectives, skills, procedure and product.

AO2: o Understand the range and uses of spoken language, commenting on meaning and impact and draw on this when talking to others. o understand variations in spoken language, explaining why language changes in relation to contexts

 Over time

Adapting to new technologies

 Different social contexts: different groups, different situations, different purposes. o Evaluate the impact of spoken language in their own and others’ use

 How we structure our speech,

 Our choices of tone, register, pace

 How we support spoken language with non-verbal communication

Week 2:

Structure of news programmes. How are the stories chosen?

Give list of fictitious events and ask girls to put together a news show for a five minute slot.
