Step 1
The candidate should submit to the Research and Research Studies Committee, with their supervisor’s
recommendation:
 2,000 word ThD or PhD outline of the research proposal that includes a justification for their
transfer from the MTh
 Statement that indicates where the material to be externally assessed fits into the overall scope
of the proposed doctoral research, and a bibliography
Step 2
If the R&RSC resolves that the candidate be granted leave to submit a piece of research to be assessed
for the transfer, the candidate will be advise to submit for external evaluation the following:

1. substantial written work of at least 15,000 words which might take the form of a chapter of the
thesis; and
2. a list of 2-3 external examiners with their details
3. the ThD/PhD outline of the research proposal approved by the R&RSC, and any other
information that the candidate or his/her supervisor(s) considers relevant.

by email: ekohn@actheology.edu.au

If you are applying to undertake your research on a part-time basis, please attach a statement to show:

that you will have sufficient time available to be able to complete the degree requirements
within the maximum period

that you yourself will plan and carry out the intended research

that you will, for the purposes of your research, be under an ACT accredited supervisor and
conform to all related ACT regulations.
Together with your statement, you must provide a declaration from your employer, if you are in
employment, confirming that you will have a reduced workload allowing you to pursue your research.

The supervisor’s recommendation to the Research and Research Studies Committee in the case of a
transfer should specifically address these points:



quality of the applicant’s current work (including assurance that the applicant is progressing
with work at a standard and rate which will be likely to ensure that a thesis of the required
standard is submitted within the time remaining for candidature);
potential of the applicant to conduct research at doctoral level; and
potential of the masters research project for upgrading to doctoral level.
