Matt Barenie Title Slide “The History of Organ and Tissue Donation” by Matt Barenie The history of organ and tissue donation began long ago beginning in 1870, since the 1870's more and more people are living longer and healthier due to medical advances and more organizations and laws promoting organ and tissue donation. (Nfschools.net, n.d.) Body Content The first completely documented human tissue grafting was performed by a Swiss surgeon, Dr. Jacques Reverdin in 1870. (Wikimedia, n.d.) On December 23, 1954, the first successful living-related kidney transplant led by Dr. Joseph Murray and Dr. David Hume at Brigham Hospital in Boston. A kidney was transplanted from Ronald Herrick into his identical twin, Richard. Dr. Hume (Jap.physicology.org, n.d.) Dr. Murray In 1962, Donor Alliance states the first successful kidney transplant from a deceased donor, led again by Dr. Joseph Murray and Dr. David Hume at Brigham Hospital in Boston. (Jap.physiology.org, n.d.) In 1968, the Uniform Anatomical Gift Act establishes the Uniform Donor Card as a legal document for anyone 18 years of age or older to legally donate his or her organs upon death. (Secondchancelife.com, n.d.) In 1981, Donor Alliance states the First Successful heart/lung transplant led by Dr. Brice Reitz occurred at Stanford University Medical Center. (Scopeblog.standford.edu, n.d.) In 1983, the FDA approves Cyclosporine, the most successful anti-rejection medication developed to date. This leads to less rejections and longer and healthier lives for transplant recipients. (Themesotheliomalibrary.com, n.d.) In 1984, Donor Alliance states the National Organ Transplant Act (NOTA) establishes a nationwide computer registry operated by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS); authorizes financial support for Organ Procurement Organizations (OPOs); prohibits buying or selling of organs in the United States. In December of 1993, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published the interim final rule requiring the screening and testing of tissue donors for certain transmissible diseases such as HIV and hepatitis, as well as the screening of donors for behavioral risk factors. (Anh-usa.org, 2010) In 2010, According to New York Organ Donation Network, the world’s first full face transplant took place in Spain. The recipient was a man injured in a shooting accident. Conclusion Even with all this advanced medical equipment and procedures and laws, the lacking of organs and tissues is a real issue and the over 100,000 plus people on the waiting list and future people that will be on the list need your support.
