Spelling in 6th Grade
A little different this year. You will be learning words on your own,
personal spelling list. Here’s how it will work.
 Spelling will be done twice a month, alternating with other word
study.
 You will have a personal spelling list of 10 words.
 Your words will consist of words missed on a pre-test,
misspelled words in your writing and/or word study words.
 You are responsible for completing a “Nifty Fifty” spelling
assignment independently each spelling week. These will be
graded.
 You will have a spelling test on Friday which will also be graded
 You may do additional work during class time with your words
or words with similar spelling patterns
Nifty Fifty
The Nifty Fifty are spelling practice activities each worth a certain
number of points. Your spelling grade will depend on the number of
points you earn. To get the maximum number of points for each
activity, you must do the activity correctly. For example, if you
choose to write a “Dear Spiderman” story and don’t trace over the
words in a different color, you will only get half the points. Also, your
spelling words must be spelled correctly. After all, it is spelling!
Your goal is to do a combination of activities which total 50 points.
Nifty Fifty Activities
20 points
Trace-Copy-Recall. For this activity, you write your
words one at a time. Set your paper up with three
columns labeled Trace-Copy-Recall. In the first column,
write your word. Then, trace over it with a different
color. Write the word again in the second column, then
fold the paper so you can’t see the word and write it
again.
15 points
Pyramid Words. Using graph paper, write your words,
starting with the first letter, then the first 2 letters, then
the first 3 letters. Continue until you have written the
whole word. Say each letter as you write it.
10 points
Hunt and Peck. Type your words three times on your
computer. Use a different font each time.
10 points
Spelling Bee. Say the word and write it. Then say each
letter as you write it. Then, say the word again and write
it. It looks like this:
Practice, p-r-a-c-t-i-c-e-, practice
10 points
Dear Spiderman. Write a letter to Spiderman using all of
your words. Trace over each spelling word in a different
color. Letters can be silly but words must be used
correctly.
5 points
Alphabet Soup. Write your words in alphabetical order
and reverse alphabetical order
5 points
Color Code. Write your word, then trace over the
consonants in blue and the vowels in red. This helps you
really see the vowel patterns in words.
Your activities must be on notebook paper with a proper heading on
each page. Put the point total for each activity in the right hand corner.
Staple all the activities together and turn in on Friday.
