eday Lessons 1, 3, 5 – Geology – Richards
eday Lesson 1: Investigate the results of an asteroid impact on Earth. The impact you will model would
simulate an asteroid just over 3000 feet across landing at the intersection of Barron Street and US35.
Log into: http://impact.ese.ic.ac.uk/ImpactEffects/
Use the input parameters: 1000m diameter asteroid, density 3000 kg/m3, impact velocity 17 km/s and
impact angle of 900 and target density 2500 km/m3
Graph the results of Thermal Radiation, Ejecta, Air Blast, Seismic Effects versus distance from the impact
(x-axis, kilometers) begin at 5 km (why not start at zero?) Assuming the impact is in the middle of Eaton,
mark on each graph the locations of 5-Points (2 km), Dayton (30 km), Richmond (24 km), Indianapolis
(150 km) and any other major urban area of interest.
eday Lesson 3: Using the same site as in Lesson 1, and the same data points you did on the first model
you completed, change the type/composition of object impacting the Earth; for example a comet (ice)
or iron asteroid. Comment on the changes compared to the very rocky asteroid modeled in Lesson 1.

Follow the procedure listed in the lesson and answer the questions:
1. What is it?
2. When did it live?
3. What did it look like alive?
4. How did it move?
