Scholarship Competition
The Arts & Humanities Council of Tulsa is pleased to announce the eighth annual Jenk Jones
from the Tribune Scholarship Competition. Five awards of $1,000 each have been established
in memory of Jenkin Lloyd Jones by his wife Ana-Maria Lloyd Jones. Mr. Jones was a gifted
writer, who always promoted the importance of the acquisition of knowledge, who was deeply
committed to the City of Tulsa and the state of Oklahoma, and whose career at The Tulsa
Tribune was illustrious and far-reaching. Ana Maria wishes to continue Jenk's journalistic
influence by encouraging youth to develop a lifelong passion for excellence in writing. She will
present the awards at the Harwelden Awards Reception on May 27, 2014.
Eligibility: To enter the essay competition, the student must be enrolled in the 2013-2014 school
year (Juniors or Seniors) and must be attending a high school in Tulsa County.
Competition Guidelines: The essay should not be less than 750 words nor exceed 1500 words
and must be double-spaced. Essays will be given anonymous review. The student’s name
should not appear on the essay itself. In an accompanying cover letter, the student should give
his/her name, address, telephone number, name of high school, name of English teacher, and
preliminary ideas for use of the award. Submissions should be addressed to: Jenk Jones from
the Tribune Competition, Arts & Humanities Council of Tulsa, 101 E Archer St, Tulsa, OK 74103.
Deadline for submissions is Monday, April 21, 2014.
Task: Read “Drowning in Information” by Jenkin Lloyd Jones, “Break from Digital World is
Welcome” by Bill Sherman, and “Social Media Fuel Risky Weight-loss Goal” by Jim Salter.
Consider what these authors have to say about electronic media and what role electronic media
plays in your life.
Essay Topic: How can a person in 2014 stay informed, keep in touch, and continue to
grow intellectually but not become controlled by technology?
Your essay will be judged on style, clarity of writing, originality of thought, and examples cited
that underscore your argument. Competition winners are asked to write a letter to Ana-Maria
Lloyd Jones before high school graduation. Letters may be sent to:
