Arf on the Housetop Costume ideas Dear Johnson First Grade Parents, It is time to begin planning and making the costumes for your child’s performance in the December musical, Arf on the Housetop. Below is a very simple idea for a costume. You may follow these suggestions or you may design your own dog creation to match your child’s character. Your child will need their costumes at school on Thursday December 19th. Thank you for making your child’s experiences a successful one! Sincerely Mary Scaggs K-2 Music Educator Buster Bulldog (Zachary 1S) – Tan sweat pants and a white sweatshirt. He needs medium floppy ears attached to his tan doo-rag. Cory Cocker Spaniel (Amelia 1P) – Tan sweat suit. Buy some blonde hair extensions (approx. $1.00 a pack at a beauty supply store) and with hot glue, attach one end of the extensions to a long cardboard oval. After the glue is dry, brush out the extensions to make a big fussy mess. Make a tail out of cardboard and attach extensions as you did on the ears and brush them out as well. Cha Cha/Chi Chi Chihuahua (Brianna 1P/Elise 1MC)– They need a tan sweat suit with a white tee shirt pulled over the shirt. Short ears attached to a sombrero. Harold/Henry Hound Dog (Jacob 1P/ Nick 1S) – White sweat suit with brown spots cut out of brown duct tape. Attach long brown ears (covered with brow felt) to white doo-rag. Make a long brown tail out of felt. Colin/Connie Collie (Graham 1MC/Anna 1P) – Tan sweat suit with white socks over the pants. Make a long bushy tail out of blonde extensions and attach to the backside of the pants. Paint face tan. Dolly Dalmatian (Lizzy 1MC) – White sweat suit with black spots cut out of black duct tape. Add a red ribbon around the neck. Ernie English Setter (Chase 1P)– White sweat suit with many small black spots cut out of duct tape. Get black hair extensions and hot glue on a white doo rag. Brush out the extensions to make long fuzzy ears. Attach a small British flag to the front of the shirt. Evita Akita (Elizabeth 1S) – Brown sweatshirt and white sweat pants. Attach short brown ears to a brown doo rag. She needs a curly white tail. Cut a large curl out of white foam board and cover with white cotton balls. Attach to the back of the sweat pants. Iris Irish Setter (Nora 1P)– A red sweat suit, red doo rag and long shaggy ears. Take the red felt and cut many thin strips into the bottom edge of the ears, to make her look shaggy. Hot glue a silk iris on the top of one of the ears. Cut a shamrock out of green felt and attach to the front of the shirt. Charlotte Chow (Lillian 1S) – Brown sweat suit with a brown doo rag and short brown felt ears (slightly rounded on the ends.) For an extra furry look, purchase a Styrofoam floral ring big enough for the child’s face to fit in. Wrap the ring with brown yarn. Create “pom-poms” to attach to the ring. Start by cutting a piece of heavy cardboard 4”X6”. Wrap the yarn around the cardboard about 50 times. Then run a piece of yarn through one end and tie it off, slip it off the cardboard, and cut the looped end of the yarn. Tie the pom-pom to the front of the Styrofoam ring. Make enough pom-poms to cover the front of the ring. Attach Dinch elastic to the backside of the ring, to hold it to the child’s head. Make a big fluffy tail out of the leftover brown yarn. Patty Pointer (Olivia 1MC)– A white sweatshirt and black sweat pants. Add black spots on her white shirt. She needs long ears attached to her doo rag. Polly Poodle (Lily 1S) – A white sweatshirt and white doo rag. Take a bag of cotton balls and hot glue all over the doo rag. Glue cotton balls to her white ears too. Add a bow in her hair for a finish. A pair of white leg warmers would be adorable over her sweat pants. Bowser Schnauzer (Zachary 1MC) – A grey sweat suit with white socks over the pants. He needs a grey doo rag with short pointed ears. Bobby Beagle (Julian 1MC) – A dark brown sweat suit. Pull a black tee shirt over the sweatshirt and white socks over his pants. Attach long floppy ears to his doo rag. Barbara/Betty Beagle (Ana 1S/Elizabeth 1MC) – Dress Betty just like you did with Barney, except hot glue a big pink ribbon on the top of her doo rag. Jack Russell (Ryan 1S) – He needs a white sweat suit with medium brown spots made out of duct tape. Make long pointed ears out of poster board and cover with the medium brown duct tape. Hot glue ears on to a white doo rag. He needs a skinny tail cut out of white felt. Grayson Greyhound (Gus 1P) – Greyhounds come in many colors but ours should be grey. Use a grey sweat suit that is too small, to make the child look very skinny. Medium grey felt ears should be attached to a grey doo rag that is hot glued to flop backwards. Louie Lab (Matthew 1Mc) – A tan or black sweat suit, medium tan or black felt tail attached to the back of the sweat pants. Medium tan or black felt ears that hang down. Paint face tan or smudged black color. Glenda/Garrett/Gordy Guard Dog (Katie 1S/Oliver 1MC/Max 1S) – Brown sweatshirt and black sweat pants. Brown or black doo rag with cardboard pointed ears attached. Add a police hat and police badge. Attach a pair of toy handcuffs onto the costume. Pammy Pomeranian (Riley 1P) – A tan sweat suit and a cheap short blond wig. Take the wig and brush it over and over, till it’s nothing but a fuzzy mess. Cut a small portion of the wig and glue it to the end of his tail. Glue short tan ears to a headband. Pat Pit Bull (Bella 1MC) – Black sweat suit with a white tee shirt over the sweat suit. He has black short ears that stand up and a short stubby tail. Sally/Sam Saint Bernard (Daryn 1P/Carter 1S) – A white sweat suit with a brown tee shirt pulled over. Find a small keg and tie it around his/her neck. Attach medium brown ears to his/her brown doo rag. Family member’s costumes: Father (Noah 1S) – wear dress pants and dress shirt and tie. Mother (Grace 1P) – wear a dress and add an apron. Child #1 (Annie 1S) – wear clothing to look like a little child. Child #2 (Charlotte 1MC) wear clothing to look like a little child. Child #3 (JP 1P) wear clothing to look like a little child. Santa (Robbie 1MC) we have a Santa suit you can borrow.
