MENTORS
change lives.
Mentors form the backbone of the support
system offered by the Evanston Scholars
program. Mentors are community members
with the desire to help an academically
ambitious youth find success in college.

SCHOLARS
Is mentoring right for you?
Evanston Scholars works very hard to match
mentors and scholars to help ensure good
outcomes. Are you the
right match for one of
our students? You
just might be!
About Mentoring:
What is expected from the
mentors?
~Commitment to helping one
Scholar with the college
application process and
transitioning to college
~Communication with Scholar
through phone calls, emails and
text messages to follow up on
workshop activities and establish
rapport
~Attendance at orientation and
regular contact with Evanston
Scholars Staff
~Check-ins with Scholars during
four years of college to get updates,
help problem solve, and offer
encouragement
How much time will mentoring
involve?
Our goal is good communication so
we ask mentors to have some
quality contact with Scholars at least
twice a month. Contacts may
include outings, phone calls, emails
or texts. Evanston Scholars also
provides some organized activities
to help facilitate this process.
More about us…
Evanston Scholars is a non-profit organization that improves college
access and success for a diverse group of ambitious, underserved
Evanston students, starting with the college admissions process and
continuing until graduation. While we work in cooperation with
Evanston Township High School, we are a separate entity. The
program offers workshops, mentors, college coaches, and a variety of
other supports to students lacking financial, academic, family and/or
community resources.
Services Provided:
Every Evanston Scholar receives:
 A 5-year mentor to assist with college applications and college
selection while the Scholar is in high school. In college, the
mentor continues to be of the Scholars’ support network,
keeping in touch and providing support and advice as
needed.
 A full curriculum of college-readiness programming,
including:
 Parent/Scholar orientation
 ACT Preparation Course
 Summer Opportunities Program
 1:1 college counseling to find a “good match” college
 College application and college essay seminars
 Campus visits
 Financial aid workshops (understanding FAFSA and
financial aid packages)
 Resume and interviewing skills
 Budgeting and transitioning to college advice
 On-campus college coaches
 Ongoing communications with Evanston Scholars peers,
mentors, college coaches, and staff.
