SPRINGBURN SCHOOL
Mt. Somers Springburn School is a rural school set in the foothills of Mid Canterbury at the mouth of the Ashburton
Gorge.
The school’s five classrooms and administration area have been almost completely refurbished in the past four years,
and it also has an adventure playground area, a large playing field, a tennis/netball court, and a squash court in the
grounds.
Our school draws pupils from a wide area surrounding Mt. Somers and Springburn and receives close parental and
community support.

recreational lakes (boating and fishing) in the Ashburton Gorge high country

Mount Sunday where part of the ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy was filmed
o
Rivers, walkways and bush reserves, and is close to Mt Hutt Skifield
The area is rich in history and renowned for its mineral resources and geological uniqueness.
The school is part of the Mid Canterbury network of schools and as part of this group, schools interact for sporting and
cultural events.
A Principal leads and manages the school, working together with a Deputy Principal, and three Ministry of Education
funded teachers and one Board of Trustees funded teacher, and a range of support staff. All staff have a diverse range
of knowledge, skills, abilities, and understandings that they bring to their work each day.

Job Description

Permanent position.
A classroom teacher responsible to the Principal and through the Principal to the Mt. Somers Springburn School Board of Trustees.
QUALITY TEACHING EXPECTATIONS

Is always challenging their curriculum learning and assessment knowledge, looking for ways to continually improve their
teaching practice.

Provides a balanced curriculum through varied activities and teaching techniques to cater for differing learning styles within
the classroom, including higher order thinking.

Is thoroughly planned and prepared before teaching takes place. They continually evaluate and reflect on their teaching
practice to action areas where it can be improved.

Sees the parents/caregiver, the child and teacher as being shared stakeholders in the pupil’s educational journey. The
teacher needs to have excellent interpersonal skills to allow clear effective communication in reporting and goal setting to
take place

Treats colleagues with respect, working with them co-operatively and collegially to promote students’ learning

Promotes a positive learning environment where a high standard of work is expected, children are motivated, students set
and evaluate their own goals and where individual differences are valued

Has a tidy, bright classroom environment. They have clear class management systems in place to cater to all learning
