THE ORGANIZATION The Glacier National Park Conservancy is the philanthropic and outreach partner to Glacier National Park. The Conservancy enriches the Glacier National Park experience by providing strategic investment in preservation, education and research programs that meaningfully engage visitors and supporters, sustaining Glacier’s heritage for generations to come. The Conservancy was established in 2013, following the merger of two respected organizations; Glacier Natural History Association, and Glacier National Park Fund. THE RESOURCE Glacier National Park preserves more than a million acres of forests, alpine meadows, lakes, rugged peaks and glacial-carved valleys in the Northern Rocky Mountains. Its diverse habitats are home to nearly 70 species of mammals including the grizzly bear, wolverine, gray wolf and lynx. The park contains more than 375 historic properties and six national historic landmarks. Over 270 species of birds visit or reside in the park. The landscape is a hiker's paradise that is traversed by more than 740 miles of maintained trails. Glacier Park's varied climate influences and its location at the headwaters of the Pacific, Atlantic and Hudson Bay drainages have given rise to an incredible variety of plants and animals. POSITION DESCRIPTION: DIRECTOR OF PHILANTHROPY The primary purpose of the Director of Philanthropy is to oversee all fundraising, development, and membership activities. The Director of Philanthropy reports to the CEO and works closely with the Board of Directors’ Philanthropy Committee and Glacier National Park leadership team to envision, develop, and implement a short and long-range strategic fundraising plan for Glacier/Conservancy priorities. PROGRAM MANAGEMENT Manage all aspects of the Conservancy fundraising program which includes individual, foundation, and corporate giving, proposal writing and editing, and grant management and reporting Develop and communicate a broad vision for fundraising by developing annual and long range strategic fundraising plans to meet identified goals, incorporate existing programs, and identify new opportunities Stay current on national funding sources and trends to help position Conservancy ahead of major funding changes or trends Develop and implement strategies to increase Conservancy effectiveness in organizational capacity building, both with membership and across the philanthropic sector Strengthen and expand the Membership program, creating and executing a strategy for a large sustained base of annual individual donors (members) Implement and grow a planned giving program with an emphasis on bequests and other simple planned giving vehicles DONOR DEVELOPMENT Work with the Board of Directors and CEO to cultivate and build high-impact relationships that will support the Conservancy’s current and future vision and plans Have primary responsibility for the development and implementation of a long-term stewardship program aimed at cultivating deeper ties with donors and planned giving donors Maintain professional contacts with all key donors preparing appropriate progress reports and ensuring adequate management of grants and other gifts Monitor all donor information; provide and present statistical analysis to board and senior leaders LEADERSHIP AND TEAM DEVELOPMENT Serve actively as a member of the Conservancy external relations team, working collaboratively with Conservancy staff on initiatives and fundraising programs for the Conservancy and the National Park Service at Glacier National Park Function as an articulate, enthusiastic, and visible spokesperson for the organization and senior leader of the organization Provide clear and compelling program leadership, including the ability to articulate and implement a vision and strategy Identify, develop, and mentor the Philanthropy and Membership teams Establish and monitor staff development and performance. Assign accountabilities, set objectives, determine goals, establish priorities, and conduct annual performance appraisals Manage the development program data base and oversee staff responsible for data entry and gift processing FINANCIAL Establish and implement departmental infrastructure needed to grow the Philanthropy budget (undesignated and restricted funds) through the solicitation of major gifts, federal and state grants, special events, and corporate and foundation support Expand and diversify Conservancy donor base and work closely with other team members to secure funding for new initiatives Meet profit & loss project goals and develop and manage the department budget BOARD RELATIONS Advise the Board of Directors, CEO and NPS executives on fundraising policies, procedures, issues and trends related to working with the National Park Service Partner with the Philanthropy committee Chair and other Board members to ensure their engagement in achieving Conservancy development goals Work closely with the Philanthropy Committee Chair to identify key issues and set appropriate agenda for committee meetings QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, CHARACTERISTICS A minimum of five years’ experience in directly related positions that have included primary responsibility for a comprehensive philanthropy program of a nonprofit organization. Significant experience in strategic, managerial and “nuts and bolts” elements of philanthropy work. Proven experience and knowledge of the key elements of nonprofit philanthropy functions including major gifts, annual fund, membership acquisition and development, capital campaign, foundation and corporate giving, and planned giving. Successful track record in strategic planning and design of a new philanthropy program, undertaking all aspects of fundraising including, but not limited to, major gifts program, donor cultivation, and capital campaigns. Significant experience in working directly with a Board of Directors, Philanthropy committee, fundraising committees, and government executives. Knowledge of legal and ethical framework for fundraising. Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills. Proven ability to work in a team environment to accomplish the goals of the organization. Experience organizing and managing events for the purpose of cultivating prospective friends of the organization. Prior work with a public lands or environmental organization is highly desirable. Ability to thrive in a fast paced, dynamic, growing start up environment. Experience with donor database. Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge experience preferred. Ability to occasionally work long hours and weekends. Must be willing to travel frequently to locations throughout the country to meet with prospective donors. Bachelor’s degree (minimum).
