First Grade Summer Reading Program
Rockledge Elementary
The purpose of the PWCS Summer Reading Program is to encourage students to enjoy quality literature and to continue
developing their independent reading skills. Student participation in the program is voluntary. Students who choose to
participate in the program are required to complete a minimum of five books.
Students participating in the program in First Grade will complete a list of books read. The documentation is to include the
name of the author, the title of the book, and a parent or guardian signature indicating that the student has completed the
reading.
First Grade students who participate in Prince William County Public Library's Summer Reading Program, the Public
Library documentation will apply.
Students in First Grade who read a minimum of five books will receive an extra S+ for each book completed, for a
maximum of five. The summer reading documentation will be submitted by the student by the end of the first week of
school.
The following titles are suggestions for summer reading. Other books selected by the student with guidance from a
parent/guardian and/or librarian are also acceptable. Participation in the PWC Public Library Summer Reading Program
and its documentation is also acceptable.

Annotation
When Mamma Pearl washes their favorite blanket it's a sad day for best
friends Bubba and Beau, but it gets worse when she decides the baby
boy and his puppy need baths, too.
Twelve mice that live in a cuckoo clock wander out to find birthday cake
and have a party while Max the cat sleeps.
It's raining cats and dogs! Good thing Rover is snuggled safe and dry
inside his doghouse--until, one by one, a soggy menagerie of creatures
shows up looking for a cozy place to sit out the storm.
Clifford celebrates his birthday with his friends, their gifts, and a special
cake
An early reader book featuring Biscuit, who tries to coax a little puppy to
come out and play.
The farm animals try to divert a busy little spider from spinning her
web, but she persists and produces a thing of both beauty and

wonders of winter together.
When Christopher Rabbit learns to count in school, he enjoys it so much
that he counts everything in sight, including how many baskets his
friends make when they play basketball and how many peas and carrots
are on his plate.
Earl and Pearl do not want Chicken's help in the garden, until a swarm
of grasshoppers arrives and her true talent shines.
When Old Bear falls asleep for the winter, he has a dream that he is a
cub again, enjoying each of the four seasons.
A little yellow bird teaches Rocket the dog how to read by first introducing
him to the alphabet.
Of all the players in the little league, Harold was the littlest. No matter
how hard he tries, Harold is no good at baseball. Until one day, during
a very important game, Harold gets his big chance to show that being
little isn't so bad after all.

Ben gets help from a blind friend, Mr. Thomas, when Aggie chases a ball
at the park and does not come back.
While enjoying autumn weather and activities, Mr. Putter, realizing how
much he misses going to school, takes his cat Tabby, their adventurous
neighbor, Mrs. Teaberry, and her cake-loving dog Zeke to "Show and Tell."
One winter night, a cozy house full of animals is awakened by a knock
at the front door. They have no idea what they'll find on the other side,
and Max the duck is the last thing they expect. Soon this larger-thanlife houseguest is making himself at home--and forcing his way into the
hearts of his reluctant hosts.
Amanda Pig and her family and friends try to find different ways to beat
the heat.
Little Bear takes the lead on a walk through the forest knowing that Big
Bear is not far behind to catch him, praise him, rescue and comfort him

These focus on number recognition and formation, one to one correspondence, and recognizing sets
and groups of amounts of objects.
These are imaginary stories about fairies, giants, magic deeds, etc.
Examples of nursery rhymes are Mother Goose. Hey Diddle, Diddle, and Baby Bunting. They focus
on rhyming, repetition, rhythm, and build vocabulary.
These focus on the parts and needs of plants as in The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle
These books should contain poems that children enjoy and want to have read over and over
These focus on the characteristics of each season: changing leaves in the fall, snow in winter, heat
and vacation in the summer.
