2. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
YGT (Young Generation Thinkers) is a section 21 ‘voluntarily association” there to visiting
youngsters detrimental issues and wherein YGT is foreseen with a constructive eye by using
infrastructure like sports and recreation, education and necessary basic tool to better our
citizenry.
Our critical natural resources suggests that nearly 40% of municipal water lost and route to
customers Water research commission’s finding means government loses R7bm revenues and
water – scarce South Africa forfeits 1,580-million cubic meters of water each year. Almost 40%
(36.8%) the total municipal water supplied in SA IS lost before it reaches municipal customers,
from industry to households, according to research released by the water research commission
(WRC)
Water and environment affairs minister Edna Molewa has set a target to reduce this “nonrevenue
water” – which is water lost before it reaches a customer, through leaks, theft and metering
inaccuracies in municipalities to 15% by next year.
The report reveal that SA’s water losses while high in comparison to the developed world and
low compared with the developing world, are in tune with the global average of 36.6%.
Municipalities are in management mode and the lack of information available from more than
half showed these municipalities are not even aware they have a problem says research leader
Ronnie Mckenzie.

INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND INFORMATION
YGT was formulated on the 20th of March 2009 and had hosted a number of significant
projects. YGT is currently registered by the Department of Social Development, as a voluntarily
organisation. With a membership of more than 600 young people across South Africa. MochaPanda vision, mission and goals is for young people to be forward thinking, to be economic
contributors, to be change makers. Be there to destroy a culture of hand-outs, and become gogetters. By forming, motivating and revitalising community development structures and forums,
for them to start as individuals and groups to be there to address their dire needs, and channel
them to be connected with different relevant stakeholders, rather than to wait for hand-outs.
Currently, young people make-up the majority of citizens living in this country. By activating
them to start owning and taking charge of these situations will not only help to redirect the vision
of youth development but will advocate a New National Youth Policy by government to be
effective from 2014-2018.
The following are the objectives of YGT:
•
•
•
•
•
•
To bring awareness to people, also make the corporate sector and government to fully
understand the needs analysis of the South African youth.
To create a youth database, for an in-depth understanding of what would be a Strategic
and Proper Plan for young people of South Africa, going forward.
To assist as far as youth challenges when getting solutions from the same youth
To answer the question of youth crisis
To re-sensitise youth participation; for the same youth to be proactive when it comes
to youth matters and their future. By them starting to form solutions, and engaging in a
“Communicative Dialogue for Action-Jam Sessions”.
To activate responsibility in young people, as far as taking necessary steps when
creating change in our society rather than waiting for government or corporate sector.
The following are the interventions that the organisation has advanced over the years:




Annual Heritage Day 24 September Project that was started in 2009 till to date, with
the theme: Azibuyele emasisweni. On this day we host community members and be
there to share meals, dance, music and words of wisdom for the heritage and cultural
preservation.
Back to School Campaign meant to instill education as the key to success
Human Rights Day meant to enkindle youth and community about their rights and
responsibilities
ARDP – Agriculture and Recycling Development Programme meant to alleviate poverty
and provide jobs opportunities for the youth

3.1 These interventions can be described as follows as far as SWOT analysis:
Strengths – The organization is led and driven by young people of relevant skill and
expertise who are committed in making youth development and socio-economic
aspirations possible.
Weaknesses – YGT is a youth formed and led organization there to respond to the
countries challenges without necessary or having a donor base that is thin.
Opportunities – YGT is in line with the national agenda NDP – National Development
Plan as far as youth development is concerned.
Threats – our vision can be treated with ridicule or despondent by the same townships
given the continuous status quo of hand-outs.
4. WHO WE SERVE:

8. UNEMPLOYMENT PROBLEM STATEMENT
South Africa has a huge problem of youth unemployment means that skills or experience are not
acquiring the skills or experience to drive the economy forward.

About 42 per cent of young people under the age of 16 -24 are unemployed with less 17
per cent of adults over 30

Unemployed young people tend to be less skilled and inexperienced – almost 86 per cent
do not have formal future or tertiary education, while two-thirds have never worked.
9. BASELINE
South Africa is currently facing a number of inter-related water crises, any one of which is a
potential show stopper, but all of which can be managed. These include:







Mismatch between water supply demands.
Failure to achieve demand management targets.
Theft of water resources
Decaying infrastructure
Deteriorating water quality
Loss of essential skills
Strangling of educational pipeline
Huge amounts of water are lost through decaying distribution systems, with further leakage in
consumer systems. At the same time widespread sanitation failure is threatening the well being
of users and the environment
10. FACTS AND TIPS OF CONSERVING WATER
YGT intends to touch all the relevant communities from 103 wards of the eThekwini
municipality, and starting with ward 16 & 17 when communicating water conserving tips and
facts. The following tips and facts will be communicated:







Easy ways to conserve water
Don’t let it run
Fix the drip
Close the hose
Irrigate wisely
Check the plumbing
The 5minite challenge

11. RESULT DRIVEN
A quick shower use around 20-30 gallons less water than a bath. We intend on imparting a
knowledge and culture where everyone will challenge themselves and their family members to
take 5 minute showers – use a kitchen timer to keep track. Install water- saving showerhead for
additional savings.
Further, teach our communities to say just as it is important to conserve water in your own home,
it is important to help our town and cities to save water by teaching others to use more effective
irrigation methods in industrial areas. Manufactures will also be involved in saving water by
eliminating leaks and installing meters. Lastly, for see waste water being treated as reused.
12. DEVELOPMENTAL APPROACH
There are fewer water conservation programmes in place that speaks to the youth and
communities at large, and for the same people to influence water behavioural change. YGT
through the YMWCP – YGT Municipal Water Conservation Plan are seeking to fast-track
and be there to achieve the following on community water development:
a.
b.
c.
d.
e.
f.
Reuse your water/ grey water
Making swales – swales are ditch dug along contours lines, especially to harvest water
Know your soil type help save water
Don’t water when it sunny (evaporation)
Mulching
Water harvesting
13. FIVE YEAR GOALS – AND SUSTAINABILITY PLAN
Our goal for working with governmental/municipality is to reduce water and soil related impacts
and land use conversion. The involvement of 5 YGT Youth Ward champions’ – who have
already been recruited through EPWP – Expanded Public Works Programme whose mandate is
to organise, research and imparting knowledge through:
i.

14. KEYS STRATEGIES
The reality is that education is not a substitute for skills. Schooling is not a reliable signal of
capabilities, and low school quality feeds into poor workplace learning capacity or
entrepreneurial capacity. Also given the uncertainty about the potential of school leavers,
employers consider entry-level wages to be too high relative to the risk of hiring these
inexperienced workers. The same reality awaits water conserving strategies as they must not
educate with an intention of providing skills. The following are key strategies in achieving this
vision:






Information & Education
YGT water educational Website developed
Brochures and other publication
Technical workshop
Field day
Annual meeting
15. TARGETTED GEOGRAPHIC AREAS AND POPULATION
The YMWCP target market is to touch all community members on them taking initiatives of
saving water. The water education, the trainings and workshops are more focused on the younger
generation between O-9 years age group with a programme of Water-Early Childhood
Development through story telling & plays, 10-14 years programme for early teens there to firm
group discussions traditional plays, music and plays, 14-18years introduce dialogues for change
and present scientific works, 19-35 years to be groomed as water ambassadors.
5.1.1 The Geographic coverage of the YMWCP is meant to cover the whole area of St.
Wendolin’s ward 16 & 17 wards, even though we are aware that every region is in need of a
YMWCP programme like this and their communities.
5.3 The competition is absolutely not there at all, and water education and awareness like the
proposed YMWCP there to be roll-out when knowing, feeling, touching, and conserving our
water is absolutely in dire need by the members of eThekwini Municipality as a whole.
5.4 The YMWCP action plan to realise objectives will be to involve first all community role
players to be part and parcel of the project. Have got the buy-in from the current Traditional
Leaders and the Municipal councillors ward 16 & 17.

For the project to be a success a total of 5 full time EPWP volunteers have been recruited to
work on the project or deliver the service from the same St. Wendolin’s. Given there is an
enormous skills shortage amongst the youth and unemployment rife in the area. YGT aims to
provide water educational and facilitation of skills on an on-going base to all unemployed young
people in this community through this project.
The skills and Manpower required for the project are:
6.1 Research and development team – to update and group water related materials

6.3 Public Management
6.4 Communications skills, and
6.5 Group training and workshop expertise.
6.6 Administration office
17. FINANCIAL ADMINISTRATION PLAN
The amount of R30 000.00 is requested when making this YMWCP initiative possible at Ward
16 & 17 eThekwini Municipality townships.
For the project to be sustainable even further and the organization financial needs to be met the
YMWCP will be made to be economically viable as far as running and visiting of the site.
Further, heritage tourism and relevant market strategies will be incorporated in the YGT
sustainable strategy.
