Earthquake Simulation Name __________________ In this activity you will complete three assignments and take a quiz. 1) The written answers to the questions and definitions in this packet. 2) The Travel Time Activity 3) The Epicenter and Magnitude Activity 4) The Quiz You have two days in the lab to complete this. USE YOUR TIME WISELY!!!!! Step 0: You will need to change the security settings on Java to medium. (i) Click on the Start button. (ii) Choose All Programs (iii) Go to the Java folder and choose Configure Java (iv) Choose the Security tab at the top of the window. (v) Change the Security Level to Medium, click Apply and then OK. When you start to run the program, you will be asked if you want to run java and may need to check off that you accept the risk. Do this when prompted. Step 1: Use Firefox as your browser. Go to my website and click on “Physics” then go to “Mechanical Waves” then click “Earthquake Simulation” or go to the website http://www.sciencecourseware.com/eec/Earthquake/ . Step 2:On the right side click on the “Demonstration” button. (i) Click on the “Travel Time” button. This will give you an overview of the “Travel Time” activity you will be doing. Use the arrows to go through the demonstration. (ii) Click on the “Epi and Mag” button. This will give you an overview of the “Epicenter and Magnitude” activity you will be doing. Use the arrows to navigate through the demonstration and play the animations. (iii) Once you complete both demonstrations click “Home”. Step 3:On the right side click on the “Travel Time” activity. (We are just going here to define some terms. We will perform the activity later.) (i) Click “Start”. (ii) A window will come up to familiarize you with the controls. Click “Close”. You will use this later. (iii) Click “Run” on the next window. (iv) Click on the “Glossary” tab and define the following words. Hit “Close” to go back to the list of terms. Step 4:Click on the “SP Lag Time” button. (i) Read the explanation and then hit “Start”. Answer the questions. Which wave arrives at the seismograph station first? Sketch the seismogram showing the S-P Lag Time. (ii) Click the “Two Stations” button and then click “Start”. Describe how the S-P Lag Time can be used to determine which station was closer to the earthquake. (iii) Click on “Return to Index”. Step 5:Click on the “Latitude and Longitude” tutorial. Use the arrows to navigate through this tutorial. (i) Answer the questions. What are the units used to measure longitude & latitude? What does the N or S after the latitude tell you? What does the E or W after the longitude tell you? What are minutes and seconds when it comes to longitude and latitude? What were your Latitude and Longitude for the yellow dot? (Use the “Check Answers” button before you answer this.) (ii) Click on “Return to Index” and then “Close Window”. Travel Time Activity Step 6:Click on the “Travel Time” activity. (i) Click on “Start”. (ii) Click “Run” to start the activity and then when you are familiar with the layout and tools click “Close” to get to the activity. The screen you should see has the tasks at the top and your journal at the bottom. The tools you will use are on the right. (iii) (iv) Type your full name (first & last) in the journal. Click on the “Background” tab and the “Assignment” tab to familiarize yourself with the activity. When you are ready to do the activity go back to the “Journal” tab. NOTE: You will be recording your data in your “Journal”, this is what you will turn in for a grade. (v) (vi) Perform the tasks in order in the list at the top. Use the to return to the task list. Also use the verify buttons. This is required to complete the tasks. When you have completed all of the tasks completely click “Print” to print your journal and then click “Quit” and then “Back” to return to the main menu. Epicenter and Magnitude Activity Step 7: Click on the “Epicenter and Magnitude” activity. (i) Click on “Start Activity”. (ii) Click “Run” to start the activity and then when you are familiar with the layout and tools click “Close” to get to the activity. The screen you should see has the tasks at the top and your journal at the bottom. The tools you will use is on the right. (iii) (iv) Type your full name (first & last) in the journal. Click on the “Background” tab and the “Assignment” tab to familiarize yourself with the activity. When you are ready to do the activity go back to the “Journal” tab. NOTE: You will be recording your data in your “Journal”, this is what you will turn in for a grade (v) (vi) Perform the tasks in order in the list at the top. Use the to return to the task list. Also use the verify buttons. This is required to complete the tasks. When you have completed all of the tasks and have verified your answers a screen will come up telling you that you have successfully completed the activity. Click on the Click HERE to continue” link to take your quiz. DON’T close your activity window since you will need to print it also. Quiz (You can also click on the Take Quiz Now” button on the home page Step 7:Enter your full name (first & last), Institution (Warren East High School), Location (Bowling Green, KY) and Class Code (2239199) (i) Take your quiz. (ii) Once you answer each question on the page click “Continue”. Once you hit continue, you can’t go back and correct your answers. (iii) Once your quiz is complete, print your certificate and quiz results. Then click “Close” (iv) Find the window with your journal for the Epicenter and Magnitude activity and “Print” your journal. Then click “Quit” You are now finished with this assignment. Staple your two journals and your certificate with this paper. You may take the quiz more than once. Just be sure to print the certificate with the highest score, unless you want the lower score. Everything is due at the end of class Friday, however if you want to improve your quiz score, I will accept this and only this by the end of the day Monday. You will need to retake the quiz on your own time and be sure to print the certificate.
