Recent RIHS PACERS Events April 2014 – May 2014 05-31-14: Graduation! Congratulations! 05-22-14: R.I. High School Graduation Outing to Modern Woodman Park 04-29-14 Meeting: We welcomed a Slam Poetry Performance today by a duo from St. Louis. Jay Luuve & Poetic Slang helped us to celebrate National Poetry Month with their dynamic performances, insights to poetic verse, and metaphors to issues we face daily. Our students were impressed by their stage presence and artistic vision! 04-22-14 Meeting: As our senior PACERS prepare themselves for life after Rocky, we applied our Thinking Accurately principle to the real world and discussed part one of a 2-part budget activity. Given a set of circumstances, our students prepared their budgets based on an income, fixed expenses and variable expenses. We discussed that some of the choices we make in our spending will inevitably affect our style of living, and the compromises and sacrifices we make day-to-day. Stay tuned for part 2 on 05/06... 04-15-14 Meeting: Continuing our work with Thinking Accurately, we applied this Principle to our communication and included our discussions on perception from last week. Certain words and pictures trigger our experiences and feelings associated with those words and images. These initial thoughts for us will generally not be the same for others around us. We learned that communicating accurately means thinking accurately about the messages which we are trying to send. 04-08-14: Meeting - We continued work with our new Principle - Thinking Accurately. Today our discussion focused around the idea of perception; we looked at different pictures and drawings that could have multiple interpretations. In doing so, we realized that once our minds are convinced of a certain idea or way of thinking, it is very hard to shift our perspective to that of a different one. 04-01-14: Meeting - This week we welcomed back our PACERS Seniors for their final quarter of high school! As we all transition to life after Rocky, our new Principle, Thinking Accurately, seems especially appropriate. Our activity focused on thinking about our own thinking. We completed a word association exercise, and realized that even though we may connect an idea to a certain word, another person might connect that idea to a different concept. Everyone has different ways of thinking accurately! We will work this quarter to understand all of the different elements it takes to think accurately about different situations.
