One of three surviving sisters of a litter of four, Camellia was born to a feral mother under an old truck cap in a wooded area behind a trailer in a small Orange County trailer park. Life is not easy for kittens in a trailer park as there are usually many born to unsprayed cats who seemingly belong to no one and are either fed sporadically by a well meaning resident or treated harshly by others, all the while trying to survive as best they can alongside their mother. Such was the case for Camellia and her sisters, Ivy and Heather, who had learned from their mother to be fearful and cautious, even as they all tried to survive in harsh weather in an unsafe location. I had been working at this trailer park for several weeks trapping cats and kittens, having them vetted and returned as pre-approved or sent out for adoption. Alerted by a helpful resident that there was a new litter, I turned my attention to attempting to trap them in what was a somewhat inhospitable environment. I first caught a striking tabby and white kitten I named Ivy who, Camellia and Ivy although initially afraid, had a sweet personality and took rather quickly to her new surroundings in a cage at my home. I returned to try and catch another kitten and caught a feisty, lovely kitten I named Camellia. Even though she was reunited with a sister in a safe, warm place, she was so frightened and would look at me with such fear in her eyes it touched me so. While Ivy came readily to the food when put in their cage, Camellia waited fearfully for me to move away before cautiously approaching the food bowl. She clung to her sister at the back of the cage when I needed to come near. Despite several weeks of stroking and gently speaking to her, this little bud still failed to unfold and show her true beauty, sadly so fearful of me no matter how I tried to gently coax her out of her shell. After catching the remaining kitten, who I named Heather, it was decided she would be returned to the trailer park as she was fairly feral and the family living in the trailer where she was born decided to keep and provide for her and her mother. We would try to adopt Ivy and Camellia to forever homes. The day came, when after being spayed and vaccinated, my two charges were ready to be sent out for adoption. I had no qualms about Ivy being adopted quickly, which she was, as she had a sweet personality and was full of curiosity. I was unsure about Camellia, even though we had made some progress in the trust department and she was a cute little dilute calico kitten, I did not know how she would react to others. My fears were not unfounded, as Ivy was quickly adopted 1 Camellia, Lovely As The Flower -- continued but Camellia would not allow anyone to pick her up and she was returned to Cause 4 Paws for further socializing. One of our foster homes agreed to take her for a while and try to further socialize her. After a few more weeks, and after becoming more comfortable in her new surroundings, it was decided to try putting her up for adoption once again, though I will admit I felt it would most likely have the same result. One day a lady walked into PetSmart, saw Camellia, and decided she was just what she was looking for. Although forewarned that she was a bit timid, this nice lady would not be deterred. Camellia was the kitten for her. And as Mother Nature works in some strange ways, Camellia too decided, in her own time and on her own terms, just as mom had taught her – this was the person and warm, loving environment just right for her. And you know – that lovely little bud opened right up and blossomed into the beautiful flower I always knew she could be! Author’s note: Although things turned out well for Ivy, Camellia and Heather, as it does for most all of the kittens Cause 4 Paws assists, it is very important that people know that we must stem the endless flow of litters from both cats and dogs by having their pets spayed/neutered. If you receive this Newsletter, you are already educated on this issue and have your pets neutered. But please do not be afraid to speak up on the necessity of spaying and neutering pets to your friends, neighbors, co-workers or family members. You will most likely save the lives of many! Don’t forget about the homeless, stray animals, as they desperately need someone to care about them and seek help for them. If you find or know about a homeless/stray cat or dog, please call any of the local animal welfare organizations to alert them and seek advice. Thank you on behalf of the animals! CAT FOOD IS ALWAYS NEEDED If you are able to donate a few cans or a bag of dry cat food, any size, it will make a huge difference in the lives of unfortunate cats. You may drop off donations at the Hope Animal Hospital, 5719 Plank Road (Harrison Crossing), Fredericksburg on Route 3; the Orange Veterinary Clinic at 13421 James Madison Highway in Orange; and Lakewood Animal Hospital in Locust Grove. Receptacles will be waiting for your donations. You may also call C4P at 540-972-5467 or 540-972-7902 and arrangements will be made to pick up your donation. “You can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals.” Kant 2 SPOTLIGHT -- LOIS MILLER After 12 years of diligent and dedicated service to Cause 4 Paws, Lois is retiring. During this time she has been our Treasurer, Adoption Coordinator, Intake Contact and many other miscellaneous tasks as well. Her hands-on experience with trapping cats, fostering and transporting them ( (hundreds of them!) to and from veterinary clinics, as well as PetSmart locations for their adoptions, has been a tremendous asset to our Cause 4 Paws organization and mission. As Treasurer, Lois expertly handled the Cause 4 Paws finances. We affectionately called her “money bags” – she knew just how to keep the budget balanced and put the dollars to their most efficient use. We want to thank her for all her untiring efforts for Cause 4 Paws and the community, and we sincerely appreciate all she has accomplished to keep Cause 4 Paws afloat. We will truly miss her and wish her well. She certainly deserves to retire and just maybe she can kick back a little bit! She will be able to spend more time with her family in California and might even get some projects done at home – like finishing the afghan she started 12 years ago. Thank you Lois!!! Sponsor a Cat Program If adopting or fostering a cat is not for you, consider sponsoring one and get a tax break at the same time. As a 501(c)(3) organization all funds donated to C4P are tax deductible. You can give an abandoned or stray cat a chance at a good life by paying for all or a portion of required medical care (spay, neuter, shots and/or medicines) to get the kitty ready for adoption. Just like HIV, FIV causes AIDS. FIV however, is not transmissible to humans in any way! The virus is primarily spread by bite wounds from infected cats. The risk of an FIV positive cat transmitting it to a house mate through sharing food bowls or snuggling is very small so unless the FIV cat bites housemates, they do not generally have to be separated. The average lifespan for a cat with FIV is about five years after diagnosis, however, with good husbandry they can live much longer. Just like human HIV patients, these cats have a damaged immune system and cannot fight infections so it is important to never feed them raw food and practice good parasite control. Due to the risk of transmitting the disease to other cats, and to keep the patient healthier, all FIV positive cats should be exclusively housed indoors. There is a vaccine to prevent FIV, however once they are vaccinated there is no way to distinguish between a vaccinated cat and one who has the disease and is infectious to other cats. For this reason, many veterinarians do not recommend vaccination. Cats who are FIV vaccinated need to be micro chipped and wear a collar saying they have been vaccinated so that if they end up at a shelter they are not euthanized for testing positive. There is a lot more that can be said about this disease, so if you have any more questions check out www.veterinarypartner.com or contact your veterinarian! “The ideal of calm exists in a sitting cat.” Jules Renard Dear Readers: Please note that to keep costs down, Paw Prints will be purging the mailing list effective with the NEXT edition. If we have not heard from you within the last two years, either by letter, greeting card, purchasing raffle tickets, sending in “Happy Tails”, or BEST OF ALL, by making a donation, we will be forced to conclude that you are no longer interested in Paw Prints and your name will be removed from our mailing list. We hate to remove you, because many of you have now adopted cats from us. We would love to hear from you and possibly include your/their pictures of your lovely cats in “Happy Tails”. We pulled over and coaxed him to us with some of our leftovers. He was so hungry and dehydrated. We called animal control and the SPCA, but they were unable to help us so we took him home for the night. We have another cat, Teddy, who was initially very unhappy with another male cat in his home so we kept them separated overnight. The next day we called every animal rescue group we could find. No one could take him and we noticed that something was wrong because we were finding a little Grayson and Teddy bit of blood on the blankets he was lying on. We later found out the blood was from an infected claw. Eventually one group recommended that I try and call Cause for Paws and we were so glad that we did. It was a Friday evening and they told me to go ahead and take him to Hope Animal Hospital and they would call ahead and let them know he was coming. Cause for Paws paid for him to be neutered and get up-to-date on all of his shots and repair his paw. After fostering him for a time, we fell in love with Grayson and decided to adopt him. Fortunately Teddy also fell in love with him and they have become great friends! Grayson is still on the mend when it comes to his paw, but we love having him and he has brought so much joy to our household. Kelly FitzGibbon, Fredericksburg SAM: Before Sam was adopted from C4P in late 2011 by Joe and Kim Marietta of Fredericksburg, he was known as “Cosmo”. It appears that Sam now has the world by the tail, so to speak and rules the roost at the Marietta home. He weighs close to 21 pounds and Kim says their vet does not want him to gain any more weight. Some of you may remember “Cosmo” when he became the “poster cat” for the 2011 Quilt Raffle. Sam aka Cosmo “A kitten is the delight of the household; all day long a comedy is played out by an incomparable actor.” Champfleury QUILT RAFFLE REMINDER!!!
