SAFETY RULES
1. Always be prepared to stop quickly and listen to instructions. Quiet,
safe behavior avoids accidents.
2. If an accident or spill happens, tell the teacher immediately. Small
accidents can cause big problems!
3. Know the location and use of all safety equipment, especially fire
extinguishers, eye wash stations, safety shower, and fire blanket.
4. Read experimental procedures through BEFORE doing them!
Follow directions carefully. Do not start to work until you are told to.

5. Always wear eye protection and protective aprons when doing work
with hazardous materials and open flames. Contact lenses can be
hazards under certain conditions.
6. Always secure long hair and remove hats, loose/baggy clothing,
and jewelry.
7. Never taste or smell chemicals or solutions. Assume all chemicals
are toxic and never drink from laboratory glassware.
8. If a chemical is spilled on you, immediately flush the affected area
with water and call for help (unless it is a dry chemical – brush then
flush).

9. Safely clean up broken glassware and put it in a proper container.
10. Be sure the open end of a heated test tube is pointed
away from all lab personnel.
11. Never handle electrical equipment with wet hands, or
while standing in a wet or damp area.
12. Cosmetics may not be used in laboratories.
13. Exercise care and great respect when working with
plants and animals.

14. Keep your work area neat and clean. Clean lab
equipment and wash your hands afterwards. Do not
leave the lab until it is completely clean.

The Fire Triangle:
Oxygen (O2)
Energy (heat)
Fuel

MAIN POINT: If you take away any one of the things at the points
of the triangle from the fire, it will go out immediately.
Four different classes of fire:
Class A – Wood/Paper
Class B – Oil-based/Liquid
Class C – Electrical
Class D – Burning metal; special case, fire
extinguishers do not help – too hot!!

Progressive Procedure One: Response to ALL FIRES at
Leota JHS
 Stay Calm – Take Initial Action: stop/drop/roll, spray water,
fire extinguisher, etc.
 Tell Teacher
 Pull Fire Alarm & Evacuate.
 Call 911 & tell operator the following 3 things (general info for
911 calls; land line better option if possible):
 Location – Leota JHS
 Science Room #(602, 604, 612, 622, or 625)

 Nature of Emergency (fire, injury, poisoning, etc.).
Progressive Procedure Two: Chemical Spills on People &
Things
Dry Chemicals - External
 Take Initial Action: brush off as much as possible, then
flush
 Tell Teacher
 Call/get Nurse #6506
 911 if major
Wet Chemicals - External
 Take Initial Action: flush ASAP and keep flushing
 Tell Teacher

Swallowed Chemical - Wet or Dry
 Take Initial Action: treat for shock

For Clean up of Chemical spills on floor or counter
 Tell Teacher
 Cover with kitty litter from bucket
 Sweep up and dispose of it
 Flush or wash off area

Progressive Procedure Three: Electrical Shock
 Take Initial Action: Turn off Electrical Shutoff!
 Tell Teacher
 Treat for Shock
 Call/get Nurse #6506, then 911
Progressive Procedure Four: Eye Emergency
 Take Initial Action:
a. If chemical, follow chemical rules
b. If mechanical immobilize eye and object in it
(If a long object, a taped styrofoam cup works well.)
 Tell Teacher

further injuring the student
