If an accident or spill happens, tell the teacher immediately. Small accidents can cause big problems! 3. Know the location and use of all safety equipment, especially fire extinguishers, eye wash stations, safety shower, and fire blanket. 4. Read experimental procedures through BEFORE doing them! Always wear eye protection and protective aprons when doing work with hazardous materials and open flames. Contact lenses can be hazards under certain conditions. 6. Always secure long hair and remove hats, loose/baggy clothing, and jewelry. 7. Never taste or smell chemicals or solutions. Assume all chemicals are toxic and never drink from laboratory glassware. 8. If a chemical is spilled on you, immediately flush the affected area with water and call for help (unless it is a dry chemical – brush then flush). Be sure the open end of a heated test tube is pointed away from all lab personnel. 11. Never handle electrical equipment with wet hands, or while standing in a wet or damp area. 12. Keep your work area neat and clean. Clean lab equipment and wash your hands afterwards. Do not leave the lab until it is completely clean. Four different classes of fire: Class A – Wood/Paper Class B – Oil-based/Liquid Class C – Electrical Class D – Burning metal; special case, fire extinguishers do not help – too hot!!
