ADULT LEARNING AT THE WARE CENTER (Pilot Program, Fall 2015) BEGINNER CHESS INSTRUCTION by Wood Chess Services of Lancaster 7 week course Thursdays, 12:30-2:00 p.m. Oct. 22, 29, Nov. 5, 12, 19, Dec. 10, 17 Fee: $70.00 Join the largest chess organization in central Pennsylvania in order to learn how to play chess in a noncompetitive, fun atmosphere tailored to an individual’s ability and pace. No experience or equipment is needed in order to participate in our hands-on lessons. After an overview of the basic rules, students will learn how to develop the opening, the middle game and the end game using time-tested exercises that will simplify the game into isolated strategies that can be learned in a brief period of time. Opportunities for private lessons and tournament participation will be given. Plenty of playing time will be available. This chess class is instructed by two United States Chess Federation instructors in order to provide the maximum hands-on individualized learning experience. Instructors: Mark M. Wood, owner of Wood Chess Services of Lancaster, is a retired gifted educator with 30 years of teaching and chess experience. He has certifications in school administration, elementary education and middle level mathematics. He has a master's degree at Villanova University and has doctoral work in gifted education at Widener. Mark is an Educator 500 Award winner and a PA Keystone Technology Educator. He is a gifted education author and public speaker. Mr. Wood is an advanced chess coach and a tournament director for USCF with national experience. Joseph S. Weber is our chess specialist. Being a lifetime USCF member for 45 years has enabled him to maintain a high USCF rating. He has played in over 200 tournaments in his chess career and has won numerous national awards. Joe was the head chess coach at the Conestoga Valley High School in Lancaster County for seven years. He is certified as a Scholastic Coach and Club Tournament Director for USCF. He currently instructs advanced students. ADULT LEARNING AT THE WARE CENTER (Pilot Program, Fall 2015) SCENE STUDY FOR ADULTS 8 week course, Thursdays 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. Oct. 22, 29, Nov. 5, 12, 19, Dec. 3, 10, 17 Fee: $80 Focusing on the concepts and skills of Acting that can be learned, rehearsed and presented, Scene Study for Adults provides an opportunity to explore Acting craft in a safe and motivating environment. A wide variety of Acting methods and performance techniques, as well as exposure to the "pantheon" of the world's best playwrights, will be explored. Performers of all levels and abilities are welcome, "Theatre is for everyone!" Instructor: Marion Wood O’Sullivan is a life-long performer with a passion for Theatre in all its forms. Her work as a professional actor spans regional and International theatre, Off Broadway, tours of the United States and Japan and much more. She is a graduate of the MFA program at A.R.T./M.X.A.T./Harvard University and has been a member of Actor’s Equity since 2001. Marion is busy collaborating with local artists to launch Lancaster's first and only professional Latino Theatre Company, the Paloma Players and La Academia Paloma. Being a professor of Theatre and Communications at Millersville and Eastern Mennonite Universities, as well as a Teaching Artist and private acting coach in the Lancaster area, is a daily joy for Marion! ADULT LEARNING AT THE WARE CENTER (Pilot Program, Fall 2015) CONVERSATIONAL SPANISH 8 week course Tuesdays, 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. Oct. 20, 27, Nov. 3, 10, 17, Dec. 1, 8, 15 Fee: $80 Have you ever thought that it might be fun to learn the basics of the Spanish language but have never had the time or opportunity? Look no further! Please join us once a week while we explore the fundamentals of conversational Spanish. By the end of our first session you will be able to converse at a very basic level. This is promised to be a fun and interactive learning experience for you! Instructor: Jennifer Carzola Herr was born and raised by two Spanish speaking parents, one of which (her father) is Cuban. Jennifer has spent time studying the Spanish language in several countries including Spain, Puerto Rico and Ecuador. In 1996 she graduated from Shippensburg University with a BA in Spanish and a BED in Elementary and Secondary Education. After graduation she gained experience teaching Spanish at the high school level before eventually teaching 5th grade in a Spanish Immersion classroom. In 2002 Jennifer received her MA in Spanish from Millersville University. Eleven years ago she resigned from teaching to stay at home and raise three beautiful children. She is currently still a stay at home mom but has done some Spanish tutoring and teaching small groups of children over the years. She looks forward to getting "back into the classroom" again using her Spanish speaking skills to help others learn this beautiful language and culture! ADULT LEARNING AT THE WARE CENTER (Pilot Program, Fall 2015) CIVIL WAR PERSPECTIVES 4 week course Tuesdays 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. Nov. 10, 17 & Dec. 1 & 15 Fee: $40 Eminent Civil War historian Ed Bonekemper will discuss the highlights of the Civil War in four Tuesday afternoon programs, covering slavery as the primary cause of the war, the learning period for Civil War generals (1861-62, including Antietam and Shiloh), the turning of the tide (1863, including Gettysburg, Vicksburg and Chattanooga), and Lincoln and his generals win the war (1864-65, including the Overland, Atlanta, Nashville and Appomattox campaigns). You will find many of Ed’s perspectives on the war to be controversial and thought-provoking. Instructor: Ed Bonekemper, Book Review Editor of Civil War News, is the author of six Civil War books: his just-published The Myth of the Lost Cause: Why the South Started the Civil War and Why the North Won; Grant and Lee: Victorious American and Vanquished Virginian; How Robert E. Lee Lost the Civil War; A Victor, Not a Butcher: Ulysses S. Grant; Lincoln and Grant: The Westerners Who Won the Civil War, and McClellan and Failure. Ed has made hundreds of Civil War presentations at CW Roundtables across the nation, the Smithsonian (ten times), the Delta Queen, and numerous other events. He has American history degrees from Muhlenberg College (BA cum laude) and Old Dominion University (MA), as well as a law degree from Yale law School. From 2003 to 2010, he was an adjunct lecturer in military history at Muhlenberg College. He is a retired Coast Guard commander.
