- Proclamation Line of 1763 - Law that forbid colonists from moving west of Appalachian Mountains;
imaginary line on crest of mountain range
- Growth of representative government – Expanding the number of people that can vote
- 1607, founding of Jamestown, Virginia - 1st permanent English settlement
- 1620 – Pilgrims on the Mayflower - Signing of the Mayflower Compact
- Fundamental Orders of Connecticut 1639 - plan of government in Puritan colony which expanded the
idea of representative government

- Stamp Act 1765 law placed duties on legal documents, newspapers, almanacs, playing cards, and dice
- Sugar Act 1764 - which put a new tax on molasses; Colonists threw rocks and tarred/feathered tax
collectors
- Townshend Act 1767 - law that taxed glass, paper, paint, lead, and tea
- Boston Massacre 1770 - conflict between colonist and British troops in which 5 colonists were killed
- Tea Act of 1773 which let the Company bypass tea merchants and sell directly to colonists
- Mercantilism
- Lack of Representation in Parliament (Taxation without Representation) Taxes went against the
principle of no taxation without representation. This principle was rooted in English traditions dating
back to the Magna Carta in 1215. Colonists had no representation in Parliament so they could not tax
them

- Magna Carta 1215 - a British document that stated citizens have basic rights and monarchs have to
obey the law
- Mayflower Compact 1620- agreement by Pilgrims for ruling Plymouth to ensure the general good of
colony
- English Bill of Rights 1689 1. Elections should be held regularly
2. Upheld right to trial by jury
3. Allowed citizens to bear arms
4. Affirmed the right of habeas corpus
- House of Burgess 1619 – Virginia marked the beginning of representative government in the English
colonies
- Declaration of Independence July 4, 1776 - America declares independence from Britain
-Boston Tea Party 1773 - 50-60 men boarded ships, split open tea chests and dumped tea into harbor, 342
chests of tea floated in the harbor by the end of the “party”
-First Continental Congress 1774 - 12 colonies sent 56 delegates (Georgia did not send delegates)
Delegates passed resolution backing Massachusetts and its struggle, Agreed to boycott all British
goods and stop exporting to Britain until the Intolerable Acts were repealed. Delegates also urged
each colony to set-up a militia
- Lexington and Concord - Colonists collected weapons and gunpowder and stored them in Concord,
Paul Revere shouted “The redcoats are coming, The Shot Heard Around the World A shot rang through
the air – no one knows who fired it?????, Colonial sharpshooters killed 73 and wounded 200 British
soldiers
