Thom Denton BA/BSc (hons) CELTA
I have recently returned from a cycling journey from Canterbury in England to
Bangkok in Thailand. Its completion marked the culmination of three years of
intricate planning and preparation followed by just over a year of physical
hard work, personal motivation, dedication and determination. Part way through
the trip, I stopped here in Turkey in order to work and gain teaching
experience, whilst also avoiding the more aggressive weather of winter and
increasing my funds for the rest of the trip. Whilst here, I fell in love with
the country and my girlfriend. Consequently, having completed my journey, I am
now back here to make a life.

Work
experience
02/2013 – 05/2013 Just English, Kadikoy, Istanbul
EFL Teacher

Although this was a relatively short placement, I gained
valuable experience teaching students from the whole range of
levels,
although,
mostly,
Pre-Intermediate
and
UpperIntermediate. Students were adults from all walks of life.
Classes could be up to 25 at a time and I often had over 30
teaching hours a week. Although this was sometimes difficult and
gave me little time to prepare my own material, it did allow me
to gain a lot more confidence in the classroom, whilst
consolidating my teaching style and improving my efficiency.
09/2008 – 09/2012 Canterbury Historic River Tours Canterbury,
Kent
Boatman/Tour guide/Senior Boatman

This was seasonal work throughout the duration of my
Bachelors degree. Initially the job entailed giving rowed tours
of Canterbury’s historical river Stour, which required great
presentational skills, including quick thinking, and the ability
and desire to thoroughly research the subject matter. Latter
years also included the training of new staff, ensuring they
have all the necessary to give the best possible tour.
09/2008 – 07/2009 Rochester Independent College, Rochester, Kent
Teaching Assistant

I helped out in English lessons for years 7 to 9. I also
assisted in sports lessons and ran a lunch time circus skills
session. This was only for one year as I began studying for my
Bachelors degree in October 2009.
01/2008 – 07/2008 Kingswood Activity Centres,
Bembridge, IOW
Activity Instructor

I was a children’s activity instructor involved in all
areas of making a child’s stay something that they will remember
for a lifetime. This often included my being a Group Leader. I
was responsible for making sure the whole school group’s stay
ran smoothly. I was their first port of call with any problems
they may have and being the one to remedy them. Other duties
included morning meetings where the morning’s cobwebs were blown
away with songs and games. The day then involved taking activity
sessions (Archery, Climbing, Zip Line or Canoe Capsizing) or
team building activities (Team Challenge, Problem Solving,
Nightline and Indoor Initiatives plus many more) There were also
evening entertainments until 9pm when my work usually ended for
the day. I left in order to go to university.
05/2007 – 01/2008 Air Born Kites
Bluewater, Kent
Sales Assistant

I worked in the shop selling kites and juggling
equipment. Part time until I quit working for Pitney Bowes, when
it became full time. I left in order to explore different
opportunities at Kingswood.
06/2007 – 10/2007 Pitney Bowes
Northfleet, Kent
Sales

Telesales. Cold calling businesses to build interest in a
low volume franking machine before closing the deal. Target
driven high commission after targets. I left this on realisation
that my passion does not lay within the industry.
02/2007 – 06/2007 Halifax Bank
Data Entry Clerk
Chatham, Kent
12/2006 – 01/2007 Hotel De Werdenberg
Bar Manager

05/2006 – 11/2006 The Sun Inn Faversham, Kent
Barman/Kitchen Porter
08/2005 – 05/2006 Travelling in Australia

Although I was travelling, I was working in order to keep
my cash reserves up to keep travelling. My work included Banana
Humping (picking), door-to-door charity collection, door-to-door
sales, and working on a stall in Victoria Market in Melbourne.
07/2001-07/2005
The insurance Industry London

I worked for 4 years within the insurance industry as a
Lloyds Insurance Broker. Being my first real job, this taught me
the value of good time keeping, by way of keeping appointments
with underwriters, good preparation, by way of getting to know
the various prospects in detail beforehand, and hard work, by
way of filling my day with as many appointments as possible.

Interests
and hobbies
I love cycling. It is my main mode of transport. I also, when
I can, play bike polo on a national level. I am proficient in
a number of areas of circus skills including various forms of
juggling. I can also stilt walk and ride a unicycle. I have
previously enjoyed shooting archery. I like to pretend I can
surf and I like to believe that I can play almost play
guitar, ukulele and saxophone. I love to read whatever I can
and I love a wide, eclectic range of music. I sometimes make
juggling balls and I occasionally busk for fun. I am not
normal.
