b) What is language?
Language is succinctly defined in our Glossary as a "human system of communication that uses
arbitrary signals, such as voice sounds, gestures, or written symbols." But frankly, language is
far too complicated, intriguing, and mysterious to be adequately explained by a brief
definition.
c) What is written language?
Refers to communication in its written form - specifically skills contributing to and including
reading and writing. There is evidence that we are "hard-wired" for oral language; speaking
and listening skills are most often acquired naturally by young children without the need for
systematic, explicit teaching. Language in its written form, however, is a process that is
"superimposed" on our innate oral language rules and must be explicitly taught. Many
languages continue to exist that do not have a written form
d) What is spoken language?
Is a form of communication in which people uses the mouth to create recognizable sounds.
These sounds come from a large vocabulary of sequences of sounds with agreed-upon
meanings. These sequences of sounds are called words, and each represents one or more
objects or concepts.
e) What are consonants?
Consonants are speech sounds articulated with complete or partial closure of the upper vocal
tract. Consonants contrast with vowels, which are openly vocalized.
f) What are vowels?
Are letters that you can say without stopping the flow of air from your lungs as it comes out
of your mouth, and letters you can say with very little friction that you can hear.
g) What are diphtongs?
Are types of vowels where two vowel sounds are connected in a continuous, gliding motion.
They are often referred to as gliding vowels. Most languages have a number of diphthongs,
although that number varies widely, from only one or two to fifteen or more.
h) What are phones?
Are a device used for communication between 2 or more people in different areas.
i) What is phonology?
Is the study of how sounds are organized and used in natural languages.

Is the study of the sounds of language.
k) What is a phoneme?
A phoneme is the smallest contrastive unit in the sound system of a language.
l) What is an allophone?
In linguistics, an audibly distinct variant of a phoneme, such as the different pronunciations of
the t sound in tar and star. Adjective: allophonic.Substituting one allophone for another
allophone of the same phoneme doesn't lead to a different word, just a different
pronunciation of the same word.
m) What is a minimal pair?
A minimal pair is two words that differ in only one sound.
n) What is a minimal set?
Minimal pairs are pairs of words that except for one phenomic difference sound alike. The one
phenome difference can make a significant difference in meaning between the two words. e.g.
beat-bear, wet-wit, ten-teen etc.
o) What is a syllabe?
A syllable is a unit of sound composed of


a central peak of sonority (usually a vowel), and
the consonants that cluster around this central peak.
