Week of: November 19, 2012 – November 23, 2012
Aim & Objectives:
Monday: What is sea-floor
spreading?
Performance Objectives:
Students will be able to:
 Evaluate continental drift and
sea-floor spreading
 Compare plate tectonics with
other theories of crustal motion.
 Explain how plate tectonics
unifies theories of crustal motion
 Define: crust, original
horizontality, continental drift,
sea-floor spreading, magma,
plate tectonics,
mantle,subduction
Instructional Strategies,
Activities, Labs and Process
Skills
Applicable CPI
The students will be working on
guided notes for plate tectonics,
continental drift, sea-floor
spreading, and types of boundaries.
5.4.6.B.2
Examine Earth’s surface features
and identify those created on a
scale of human life or on a geologic
time scale.
Homework: Page D4 Flashcards
5.4.6.D.1
Apply understanding of the motion
of lithospheric plates to explain why
the Pacific Rim is referred to as the
Ring of Fire.

Tuesday: What is plate tectonics
Performance Objectives:

The students will view a PPT that
follows directly along with their
guided notes from yesterday’s
class. They will be able to correct
any misinformation on their sheets
for their notes. In the PPT they will
be able to view a variety of small
clips to help enhance their
understanding of the topics.
Homework: Webquest due
tomorrow.

Continental drift and sea-floor
spreading explain observations. An
explanation is called a theory or
hypothesis. Theories are more
certain than hypotheses. As more
evidence is gathered, and
explanation may become more and
more certain. Scientists are fairly
certain that the theories of
continental drift and sea-floor
spreading are correct. Students
will make a two column chart in
small groups and compare the
observations that support both
continental drift and sea-floor
spreading.
