GENERAL INFORMATION
PROGRAMME OF COMPETITIONS
We aim to offer a wide range of competitions throughout the season, as well
as some informal competitions during the winter months. There is a list of
competitions and trophies at the end of this booklet. The main dates are
shown on the fixture list in the Locker Room. These guidelines are intended to
give you some further background.
We sometimes run more than one 18-hole competition alongside each other
on the same day, and members can choose which one(s) to compete in. This
year we also have six days on which members can opt to play in either an 18hole or a 9-hole competition, both of which count for competition handicap.
Most Ladies’ competitions are held on a Tuesday, but for those who are
unable to play at the regular times we also offer some Alternative Day
competitions on Sundays (please see p11 for further details). Saturday play
this year includes six SLGA medal competitions and five stableford
competitions
ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible to play in any competition a player must have a current CONGU
competition handicap. From 2012 this will be signified by a ‘c’ after your
handicap on the master list.
Players over 65 are eligible to play in the “Twilight Trophy” competition.
Five-day members are not eligible to play in the knock-out rounds of club
competitions, Saturday competitions or Sunday Alternative Day Competitions
as these require participants to be available for weekend play. However all 5
day members are welcome to play on Opening Day and Closing Day.
The use of buggies is not encouraged but in exceptional circumstances may
be used at the discretion of the Tournament Convenor.
Stirling Golf Club ALLOWS the use of distance only measuring devices in
accordance with Rule 14-3. This is shown on our score cards under local
rules.
For more detail see the Rule Book.
COST
For most competitions we now charge a flat fee of £2 per person, payable on
the day. Participation in the “Magic 2s” competition is optional, and costs £1.
3
DIFFERENT TYPES OF COMPETITION
SLGA COMPETITIONS
We usually play 8 medal competitions a year on our main competition day
(Tuesday). There is no fee for playing in a SLGA Medal. This year the draw for
medals will be a mixed draw. (Further detailed information is shown on the
attached note – SLGA Medal Draws.) There is the option to play some of the
competitions, mainly at the beginning and end of the season, on the
alternative day being Sunday.
This year we have organised six SLGA medals to be played on Saturdays
along with five stableford competitions. There will be no draw for these
competitions. Players will have to book a time on line.
The Silver Medal and the Bronze Medal are awarded to the player in each
division who returns the best aggregate 4 net scores throughout the season
taking into account all medal competitions.
CLUB STROKE PLAY COMPETITIONS
These are listed at the end of the booklet. The Alison Davidson Trophy will be
awarded to the player who returns the lowest aggregate of 6 net scores in the
club stroke play competitions (those marked with an asterisk).
9 HOLE STABLEFORD COMPETITIONS (FOR ALL AGES)
Some players prefer to play 9 holes, and we have arranged six dates on which
members can opt to play a 9 hole stableford competition rather than the main
competition(s). They count towards a 9 hole stableford prize which will be
presented at the end of the season.
It is now possible to gain a handicap by playing in a competition over 9 and /or
18 holes subject to a minimum of 54 holes.
These competitions are played over the front nine holes. A separate score
card is required – available from the pro shop. A special handicap has to be
calculated using Rule 22 of the Congu Handicap book, as the stroke index is
different from our 18 hole card. Please see notice board for details. Use your
nine hole handicap to calculate your stableford points. The computer is set up
to take account of the remaining holes and calculates your full stableford
points. (You may carry on playing if you wish but you must only count the first
nine holes).
SPONSORED COMPETITIONS
We also offer members the chance to participate in competitions which are
sponsored by companies or charities, for example the Peugeot LGU
Coronation Foursomes, with the winners going forward to the Area finals.
Participation in the sponsored competitions is voluntary, and may involve an
extra charge.
4
CLUB MATCH PLAY COMPETITIONS
There are three champions’ trophies to be won.
THE BRONZE CHAMPIONSHIP
This is open to 7 day members with a Handicap of 21-36 at the closing date
for entries. Those who wish to compete should sign on the entry sheet at the
start of the season. However, if we do not have a minimum of eight entrants
the Bronze Championship will not go ahead. Players reducing their handicaps
during the Competition will still be eligible to compete.
A random draw will be posted and matches will be played by arrangement,
within specified dates. As this is a scratch competition no strokes will be
given.
NB Semi finalists in the Bronze Championship are not eligible to play in the
match play stages of the Club Championship or the Handicap Championship.
THE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP AND THE HANDICAP COMPETITION
These have stroke play qualifying rounds followed by match play which is
open to 7 day members. There will be two qualifying rounds, (see fixture list
in the locker room for dates) and the 8 best gross scores from 1 out of the 2
rounds will compete for the Club Championship.
The 8 best net scores (excluding those qualifying for the Club
Championship/and the semi-finalists in the bronze championship) from 1 out
of the 2 rounds will compete for the Handicap Championship. Ties will be
decided on each players’ best counting round BIH, last 6 holes etc. If there is
still a tie, the players’ best final card will determine the position.
Draws will be made using the automatic draw system. In the Handicap
Championship, strokes will be awarded based on full difference in handicap.
The match play deadlines are set out in the locker room. Once the draws are
posted, they will stand, unless in exceptional circumstances
OTHER MATCHPLAY COMPETITIONS
Apart from the Championships, there are 2 main match play competitions that
run throughout the season for 7 day members. These are the PALMER
TROPHY (foursomes which you should enter with a partner) and the KING
GEORGE V TROPHY (singles competition). Entry sheets for these are
posted at the start of the season. For these match play competitions, entrants
will be drawn to play against opponent(s), with matches to be played within
certain dates.
In addition, both the McKenzie Cup and the Coronation Bowl have match play
stages which are open to 7 day members. For these 2 competitions there is a
5
qualifying round and the top 8 net scores go forward into the match play
stage. The draws will be carried out according to the automatic draw.
ARRANGING TIES
Each entrant is responsible for contacting her opponent to offer a choice of 3
dates on which to play. If a member is working during the week, one weekend
date should be offered. If either entrant is to be on holiday during the period
for play, she should make the initial contact. All ties must be played by the
stipulated date. Failure to comply with this rule will result in BOTH SIDES
being disqualified from the competition. Any problems that are proving difficult
to resolve should be referred to the Tournament Convener.
6
ECLECTIC AND FUN COMPETITIONS
ECLECTIC COMPETITIONS
Two eclectic competitions are run throughout the playing season. Both of
these competitions are played in conjunction with stroke play competitions.
The eclectics run from April to June, and from July to September. There will
be no entry fee and everyone returning scores in the stroke play competitions
will be eligible for the eclectic competitions. Entry of scores is via the
computerised scoring system.
Two separate fun eclectics are also organised with players responsible for
entering scores on a sheet in the Locker Room. We are again asking Ladies
who enter to pay £1 entry fee which will go to this year’s charity.
SUMMER FUN COMPETITIONS
We also run some “Fun competitions”. These do not count for handicap as
they are restricted, or are team competitions.
WINTER FUN COMPETITIONS
On Tuesdays between Closing Day and Opening Day we generally book the
tee from 10.00 to 10.30 for an 11-hole Stableford Competition. Depending on
the weather the games give ladies a chance to keep their swing going over
the winter, and/or meet up for a coffee. Scores do not count for handicap.
MIXED FUN COMPETITIONS
As well as the formal competitions run by the Club, we have an informal
arrangement whereby once a month over the winter Ladies and Gents can
sign up for a stableford competition known as the Dolly Mixtures. These take
place on the first Wednesday of the month. Look out for the signing on sheet
in the Locker Room.
LADIES’ INVITATIONAL GREENSOMES
If there is sufficient demand we run an invitational greensomes. This enables
members to invite friends to come and play with them at Stirling. Details,
including the deadline for signing up, will be posted on the noticeboard in the
Locker Room.
7
OPEN COMPETITIONS
FESTIVAL TROPHY
The Ladies Festival Trophy Competition is an “open” competition to be played
this year as a Tri-AM. This generally takes place on a Saturday towards the
end of May each year and is open to teams of ladies from any club who have
a competition handicap.
SENIORS’ OPEN
The Stirling Ladies Seniors Greensomes Open is held in July this year and is
again “open”, but restricted to ladies aged 50+ years who have a competition
handicap.
8
CLUB COMPETITIONS – ENTERING THE DRAW
This is done differently from booking “bounce” games. For the ladies’
competitions (excluding Saturday medal competitions and Sunday Alternative
Days) we have blocks of time reserved on Tuesdays (generally 8.30 – 10.15,
13.00 – 14.00, and 17.00 – 17.30).
TUESDAY COMPETITIONS
Entry to most competitions is via the PSI (player input) terminal of the
computer system. Competitions are generally set up on the computer about
two weeks in advance. Members wanting to play in the morning should log in
using their PIN number, and choose a time “zone” in which they would like to
play. If all the times are already taken, a player should choose another zone.
Players should add their names to the draw by 17.00 on the Saturday prior to
the main day competition.
The draw sheet will normally be on display in the Ladies’ Locker Room from
Sunday evening, and will be with the Pro on Monday morning. Members can
also arrange to be sent their tee times by email. Play will generally be in 2’s
unless numbers dictate playing in 3’s.
Please bear in mind that 18 holes should be completed in no more than 3
hours 30 minutes. Players should keep up with the players in front of them.
Those who do not may be guilty of slow play and should invite the group
behind to play through.
For the following scratch competitions draws will be made in matched
handicap order as far as possible -:
* Club Championship
* King George VI Cup/Queen Elizabeth Salver
* Gold Medal and Tasker Cup
Mornings: This year the draw for SLGA medals will be a mixed draw. Bronze
and Silver division players may enter the draw for all the morning times. After
the draw has been made any spaces can be used by any player, but must be
reserved via the Pro.
Lunchtimes: For lunchtime play (13.00 – 14.00) the draw takes place on the
day. For scratch competitions, Silver division players should hand their named
card to the Pro by 12.45 and pay their fee. The Pro will make the draw to
commence at 1.00. Any silver player who arrives later may enter the bronze
draw. On these days Bronze division players should hand their named card to
the Pro by 1.10 and pay their fee. The Pro will make the draw to commence
when the Silver division is completed (approx 1.20).
9
For all other lunchtime competitions, there is a mixed draw for Silver and
Bronze. All players should hand in their cards by 12.45, with play commencing
at 13.00.
Play will generally be in 2’s unless numbers dictate playing in 3’s.
Evenings:
For evening play, please book on-line. The tee will be reserved between 5 5.30 for competition play.
Other play on Tuesdays:
After the draws have been made the remaining times are available up to the
time of play, but names must be given to the Pro who controls start times.
(The copy of the draw in the Ladies’ Locker Room is for information only, and
may not be up to date.) For SLGA medal competitions only, members have
the option of playing by arrangement out with the draw times, but we would
like to encourage members to enter one of the three draws.
If you are unable to play:
If for any reason you are unable to play once the draw has been made, you
should contact the Pro Shop as soon as possible, and also let your playing
partner know. Please note that once you are entered in the draw you cannot
change e.g. taking yourself out of the morning draw and playing
lunchtime/evening.
SATURDAY COMPETITIONS
This year six SLGA medals and five stableford competitions have been
planned to take place on Saturdays throughout the season. Entry will be
through the Club’s on-line system. There will be no draw for these
competitions and no blocked off time. Players should book a time through the
Club’s on line system (Booking starts on the Thursday, 10 days prior to the
competition at 8.45pm). These competitions will count toward the Bronze and
Silver medals previously discussed on page 4. On all other Saturdays, Ladies
will have the option the play for a supplementary score. Times must be
booked in the same way as Saturday competitions. See page 14 for
supplementary score instructions. On no account should these time be
used to play a bounce game.
10
SUNDAY - ALTERNATIVE DAY COMPETITIONS
These are offered for those members who cannot play in the main Tuesday
competition. The competitions covered are shown on a separate
notice/signing on sheet in the Locker Room. Any player wishing to play on an
alternative day should sign up at least one week in advance.
The alternative day competition counts as a separate competition for handicap
purposes. If you have any questions about the arrangements please ask the
Handicap Secretary. There is further background in the SLGA Handbook.
Each player is responsible for booking a time on line, and, before play, must
go into the Pro Shop to register and pay for the competition(s) being entered.
Your scorecard should be marked and signed by another member who holds,
or has held a handicap. After play is complete each player should enter their
score, hole by hole, into the computer system and place score cards in the
Ladies Competition Card Box
This year Sunday alternative days have been set up for most competitions up
to the Mary Queen of Scots Trophy on 10th May and at the end of the season
when light is poor. There will be no alternative days for the Saturday
competitions.
11
CLUB COMPETITIONS – ON THE DAY, BEFORE AND AFTER PLAY
BEFORE PLAY
For the morning, lunchtime and evening draws, you formally enter by asking
the Pro to register your entry on to the computer system in the Pro Shop at
least 10 minutes before play. You then pay your entry money to the Pro.
A Magic 2s competition is held in conjunction with all competitions. If you wish
to enter, pay £1 in addition to your competition fee. This is voluntary, and the
funds are split between Silver and Bronze players. The winners of Magic 2s
will receive a credit at the Pro Shop.
Collect your card at the Pro Shop and write on it your name, which
competition(s) you are entering and your start time. Report to the tee 5
minutes before your start time. Failure to meet the start time may lead to
disqualification.
AFTER PLAY
For all competitions other than ‘Fun’ ones, on completion of your round check
and sign your own and your partner’s card, and enter the scores hole by hole
into the computer. Place your card in the Competition Card Box. All cards
must be returned.
It is a CONGU competition requirement to return all cards. If you have an
incomplete card please key your scores into the computer for the holes you
finished, key in zero for the others and mark N/R (no return) clearly on your
card, sign it and place in the competition card box. It won’t count for the
competition but can affect your handicap. It can also be a qualifying card
towards the 3 required to maintain your handicap.
You can still win a ‘Magic 2’ with an incomplete card.
Failure to register or pay the competition fee(s) will result in disqualification
from the competition. Disqualified scores will still count for handicap.
Results are posted in the Locker Room after each competition, and are
reported to the local press. The results of the Saturday Competitions will be
posted in the Locker Room as soon as possible. Ladies are reminded that a
reduction in handicap following the Saturday Competition should be used for
Tuesday play even if the results have not been posted. Any problems with
handicaps should be addressed to the Handicap Secretary.
The Tournament Convener and assistants are responsible for all results.
12
PROCEDURE FOR DEALING WITH DISPUTES
Any disputes on the course should be dealt with in accordance with the Rules
of Golf (Rule 2-5 Page 38 for matchplay and Rule 3-3 Page 40 for strokeplay).
Any other issues should be referred to the Tournament Convener.
PLAYERS WINNING MORE THAN ONE PRIZE IN A COMPETITION
In each competition a player may only win one prize which is determined by
whether it is a scratch or handicap competition.
SUSPENSION OF PLAY
If the course becomes unplayable or circumstances arise that make the
proper playing of the game impossible, then the authorised representatives
shall make a decision on the suspension, cancellation or postponement of the
competition. The authorised representatives are the Professional, the
Tournament Convener or any delegated ladies.
The signal for the suspension of play will be 2 loud blasts on a klaxon.
When play is suspended, the players in a match or group may, if they wish
and without delay, finish the hole they are playing, unless lightning is evident,
when play must cease immediately. Players cannot continue to play another
hole, other than the one they were in the process of playing, once play has
been suspended.
Play can only re-commence after the tournament or their delegates have
ordered the resumption of play. This will be signalled by 3 loud blasts on a
klaxon.
Penalty for breach of this rule ( Rule 6-8b) is disqualification.
13
SUPPLEMENTARY SCORES
The ability to submit supplementary scores is there in order to encourage
those of you who do not wish to play in formal competitions and/or have
recently acquired a handicap. Supplementary scores may only be returned
on your home course. If you are considering doing so, please see the notice
board for the conditions that apply, or speak to the Handicap Secretary.
From 2012, up to 10 supplementary scores per year and only 1 per week may
be returned on your home course only. The relevant book in the Locker Room
must be signed showing your intention to play before teeing off.
If you are a new member wishing to obtain a handicap please get in touch with
the Handicap Secretary.
