Collaborative Wednesdays – an LRSD Initiative for 2014-2015
Fax: 253-2149
The Louis Riel School Division has approved a project allowing several high schools to pilot
“Collaborative Wednesdays”--a one period late start on each Wednesday beginning September 10.
Classes for students will start at 9:45 each Wednesday, with classes being condensed to 60 minutes.
This late start configuration will provide time for teachers to collaborate around student learning, data, assessment, and instructional practice. Leading educational researchers have concluded that creating a collaborative culture is one of the most significant factors in successful school improvement efforts.
Effective collaboration among teachers and school leaders is linked to gains in student achievement, higher quality solutions to problems, increased effectiveness among all staff, and an expanded pool of ideas, methods, and materials that benefit all teachers.

Q: What is the purpose of collaboration? What will teachers be doing?
A: The purpose of collaboration time is to improve instructional practices and student achievement by creating a common time where teachers can meet to discuss student outcomes, common assessments, literacy and numeracy practices, and student progress, to name a few.
Q: Why is collaboration time important?
A: Leading researchers have concluded that creating collaborative cultures focused around student learning is the most significant factor in successful school improvement. Teachers need time to share techniques and strategies, to analyze student results together, to learn about new ideas related to their teaching, and to develop consistency between and among teachers and departments.
Q: Can’t teachers collaborate before or after school?
A: This is often difficult as many teachers serve as coaches or advisors to student groups and school committees, making it difficult to find time to collaborate.
Q: What other schools offer collaboration time for staff?
A: In LRSD, Collège Béliveau, Collège Jeanne-Sauvé, J. H. Bruns Collegiate, Louis Riel Arts and
Technology Centre (ATC), Nelson McIntyre Collegiate, and Windsor Park Collegiate will pilot this process.
Q: Will students be allowed to arrive early? Will transportation be affected?
A: All bussing schedules will remain the same. Those students who arrive by bus to school will be welcome to use each school’s facilities and will be supervised by EA staff.
