Clinical: MTN provides services in many different medical specialties,
with a majority of the work coming from mental health, dermatology,
radiology, and child health. This usage brings specialized care to
underserved, rural areas of Missouri in a manner that is convenient to
both patient and provider.
Educational: In FY2012, 545.67 hours of education were reported
under general education, continuing medical education and multidisciplinary. Undergraduate and graduate students, medical students,
residents, fellows and practicing providers benefit from the network
through collaboration with distant medical and research centers. MTN
allows physicians to receive continuing medical education credits by
participating in grand rounds and other educational opportunities via
video.
Administrative: In FY2012, more than 1,124.25 hours were reported.
UMHC makes extensive use of telehealth for administrative meetings
between various locations at the main hospital, School of Medicine,
Women’s & Children’s Hospital, Ellis Fischel, Missouri Rehabilitation
Center, and clinic sites. Numerous other groups use telehealth for
administrative purposes, including the Health Policy Center, Ethics
Center, Medical Education, School of Nursing, Cerner Simulation Center,
and Missouri Foundation for Health.
Top Utilization among Specialties
Mental Health; In FY2012 Burrell Behavioral Health reported
4,002 appointments. In the same time period, Pathways reported
20,780 appointments. In FY2012, University of Missouri Health
System reported 852 psychiatry appointments via telehealth. The
total for FY2012 telepsychiatry appointments came to 25,634.
The combined windshield time of transportation if the psychiatrists
drove to their location is around 4,785 hours/yr. This windshield
time reflects time that the psychiatrists would lose seeing patients if
it weren’t for the use of telepsychiatry. The reduction of windshield
time from the use of telepsychiatry results in an annual overall
savings of approximately $598,150/year to Burrell Behavioral
Health and Pathways Community Behavioral Health.
Radiology: In FY2012, 17,855 interactive video encounters have
been conducted by network participants.
Dermatology: In FY2012, 342 telehealth appointments have been
reported with rural telehealth sites throughout the State of Missouri.
Autism: In FY2012, 343 telehealth appointments have been
reported with rural telehealth sites throughout the State of Missouri.
