DEPARTMENT OF MANAGEMENT SERVICES For Reference Only CLASS CODE: 7610 PAY GRADE: 017 CLASS TITLE: SENIOR FOREST RANGER ALLOCATION FACTOR(S) This is work in forest fire prevention, suppression and presuppression, providing technical forestry services to private landowners and wood-using industry representatives, and presenting forestry educational programs. EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED: (Note: The examples of work as listed in this class specification are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in the class. Operates and maintains various kinds of equipment in the suppression of fires, including pumper trucks, bulldozers, and transports. Identifies fire hazards and conditions and prescribes and executes proper remedial steps to prevent fires or mitigate damage. Administers technical training programs in fire prevention and suppression techniques. Maintains liaison with working counterparts of supporting public fire control and management agencies and with landowner representatives. Provides technical advice on presuppression and suppression of forest fires. Investigates wildfire causes, gathers evidence, interviews witnesses, and makes recommendations to supervisors. Intensifies public awareness of fires and fire damage through fire prevention programs presented in a variety of public forums. Issues citations for certain illegal burning violations. Provides timber inventory assistance on private, non-industrial land. Provides technical direction and participates in tree seed collection. Assists homeowners in diagnosing and correcting shade tree problems. Presents forest education programs. Evaluates the performance of site preparation and tree planting contractors. Performs seedling survival evaluation. Plans and coordinates prescribed burning operations. Assists in wood utilization studies. 7610-SENIOR FOREST RANGER-CS Performs related work as required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: (Note: The knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) identified in this class specification represent those needed to perform the duties of this class. Additional knowledge, skills and abilities may be applicable for individual positions in the employing agency.) Knowledge of forest fire prevention and suppression techniques. Knowledge of the use and maintenance of fire fighting and heavy equipment. Knowledge of the effects of weather and other conditions on forest fires. Knowledge of the basic terminology, principles, tools and techniques of forestry management. Knowledge of common insect and disease problems of trees and vegetation. Skill in the operation of heavy equipment. Skill in fighting forest fires. Skill in the use of basic forestry tools and equipment. Ability to provide technical training related to forest fire prevention and suppression techniques. Ability to identify common trees, vegetation, insects and tree diseases. Ability to recognize and solve problems. Ability to communicate effectively and to make public presentations. Ability to act quickly and think clearly in emergency situations. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Three years of experience as a Forest Ranger or comparable training with another forestry or fire control organization; or An associate's degree in forest technology from an accredited college or university. In addition to the above, Florida Statute 633 requires that any person employed in this class must: (1)Be a high school graduate or the equivalent, as the term may be determined by the Division of State Fire Marshal of the Department of Insurance. (2)Not have been convicted of a felony or of a misdemeanor involving moral turpitude, as the term is defined by law and must comply with Florida Statute 112.011(2)(b). (3)Have his/her fingerprints on file with the Division of State Fire Marshal or an agency designated by the Division. (4)Have a good moral character as determined by investigation under procedure established by the Division. (5)Be in good physical condition as determined by a medical examination as prescribed by the Division. Such examination may include but need not be limited to provisions of the National Fire Protection Association Pamphlet 1582. (6)Be a nonuser of tobacco or tobacco products for at least 1 year immediately preceding application, as evidenced by the sworn affidavit of the applicant.
