6.7 Angles of Elevation and Depression Day 1
Use what you know about angles of elevation and angles of depression to find the missing measurements.
For each problem you must draw a picture(if there is not one given) and show all work.
1.
A kite with a string 150 ft long makes an angle of 45 0 with the ground. Assuming the string is straight
find the height of the kite to the nearest thousandth?
2. A plane is flying at an altitude of 12,000 m. From the piliot the angle of depression to the airport tower
is 32°. How far is the tower from the point directly beneath the plane? Round to the nearest thousandth.
3. A car is driving up a slight grade with an angle of elevation of 2°. After traveling one mile, what is the
vertical change in feet (1 mile = 5,280ft) to the nearest thousandth..
4. The angle of elevation from a boat to to the top of a 90 m hotel is 10°. How far is the boat from the base
of the hotel to the nearest thousandth.
5. A great white shark swims 22 feet below sea level. If the shark is 67.7 ft from a sailboat, what is the
angle of depression to the nearest thousandth from the shark to the sailboat.
6. A person is standing 50 feet from a traffic light. If the angle of elevation is from the person’s eye level
to the top of the traffic light is 25°. Find the height of the traffic light to the nearest thousandth, if the
person’s eye level is 6ft from the ground.
7. An 15ft ladder is leaning against a building. If the angle of elevation is 50°, will the ladder rest above or
below a window on the building that is 10ft above the ground. Explain you reasoning.
8. The wind has blown a tree so that is growing at an angle of 110° with the ground. The top of the tree is
72 ft. Find the hieght of the tree to the nearest thousandth.
9. There is a ten mile section of Interstate 10 that increases 1,500 feet in elevation. What is the angle of
elevation to the nearest thousandth.
10. Jackson and Kate are in the park flying a kite. Jackson measures his kite string to tbe 55 meters long. If
the angle of elevation is 42° and the kite is flying right over Kate’s head, find the distance from Jackson
to Kate to the nearest thousandth foot.
