Job Purpose:
The primary purpose of this role is to provide clinical support to a three year DFID
(UK Department for International Development) funded programme in Malawi aimed
at “Increasing survival and reducing poverty of 3000 disabled children and adults in
Malawi”.
The Regional Clinican will work alongside the Motivation team and wheelchair
service partners to understand current wheelchair service provision in order to
develop wheelchair services for adults and children in 3 regions of Malawi, in
accordance with the World Health Organisation 'Guidelines on the provision of
Manual Wheelchairs in less resourced settings'. They will assist with building the
capacity of relevant service personnel and with providing support to service
managers in order to establish sustainable systems for service delivery. The role will
oversee the use of products within the programme and will be supported by
Motivation’s technical staff. The role will also require liaison with community
organisations to implement a programme and develop the skills required to empower
parents / carers of children with Cerebral Palsy. Input to improving access to
education for children with physical disabilities and access to income generating
opportunities for their parents and carers will also be within the role.
As part of Motivation’s technical resource team, the regional clinican will be required
to support the delivery of training globally.
Accountabilities:
Programme:
 Evaluation of current wheelchair service provision, in accordance with the
WHO guidelines
 Asssement of the knowledge and skills of personnel involved
 Capacity development through the identification of training needs; both formal
and informal
 Selection of suitable candidates for training in referral network activities;
wheelchair and postural support device provision; and facilitators for parent
carer training.
 Organisation and at times delivery of training activities within the programme
e.g. referral network training; WHO Basic and Intermediate wheelchair service
training, Intermediate technical training; and training for parents /caregivers,
facilitators and master trainners as part of the parent carer programme for
children with Cerebral Palsy
 Follow-up and support activities with local teams, management and
communities to ensure skills, systems and procedures are established to
facilitate the 8 steps of wheelchair service provision and the on-going support
of parents and carers
 Assist in the integration of children with disabilities into local schools.
 Submission of monitoring and evaluation data for the programme
Products:
 Appropriate preparation and modification of Motivation’s product range;
working with the support and advice of the technical team
 Monitoring of the use of products within the programme; supplying feedback
to the technical team on clinical, technical and quality control issues.
Research:
 Contribute to research into education for children with disabilities in Malawi as
part of the broader project team
Global Technical Resource Team Role:
 Delivery of training and support to Motivation’s partners globally as part of the
Technical Resource Team
 Communiciate with the Technical Resource Team through their regular team
meetings; and with the global Motivation team as appropriate
Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
Essential:
 A relevant professional qualification in Occupational therapy, Physiotherapy,
Prosthetic Orthotics, Orthopaedic Technology
 Significant knowledge and expertise in the the provision of wheelchairs and
postural support devices
 Experience of working with children with cerebral palsy
 Good verbal and written communication skills
 The ability to work under own initiative and unsupervised; but also
demonstrate the capacity to be a strong team player
 Good organisational skills to plan and prioritise work efficiently
 Evidence of effective problem solving, flexibility, creativity
 Experience with working with personel from differing contexts and
organisation and levels
 Skills in training and presentation
 The flexibility to travel to other countries as requried
 Good computer literacy, including Microsoft Word and Excel.
Desirable:
 Ideally 5 years post-graduate qualification experience
 Experience of working in cooperation with health, community and government
organisations
 Experience working in a more resourced and less resourcerd settings

develop operating methods which conform to its policies of increasing the
quality of life of people with mobility disabilities
