Skills needed for curriculum development and evaluation

2.
Experiential learning is a core component of the Fellowship. Fellows conduct and report on master teacher observations, are videotaped lecturing, engage in role plays, lead casebased discussions, and conduct peer observations of teaching.
3.
Rabkin Fellows spend the year developing an educational project or research study in medical education. They must select a mentor to help guide their project or research work.
Project management plans and status reports are due monthly.
4.
Rabkin Fellows also participate in required HMS-wide dedicated medical education research sessions, which provide the fellows with the opportunity to meet other faculty undergoing similar programs of study.
Fellowship graduation requirements are satisfied by preparing for and participating in all seminars as well as completing required educational activities/assignments and the educational project. All fellows present their projects at a concluding symposium.
The Rabkin Fellowship is co-directed by Grace Huang, M.D. and Lori R. Newman, M.Ed. Invited leaders in the field of medical education, including Dr. Charles Hatem, founding director of the
Rabkin Fellowship, facilitate selected seminar sessions and provide support to the Fellowship.
Rabkin Fellowship project proposals
While all proposals will be considered, the Fellowship Directors encourage projects that are innovative and will have the greatest contribution to the field of medical education. Potential topics can be applicable to students, residents, fellows, and/or faculty and might focus on topics such as:
Critical Thinking
Education Technology

Inter-professional or Inter-disciplinary Education

Financial support
HMS faculty and BIDMC clinical fellows who are interested in advancing their educational and leadership skills as they launch their academic careers in medicine are encouraged to apply.
Applicants should plan to commit 20% of their total work effort toward the Fellowship Program.
A stipend of $20,000 is provided to Rabkin Fellows whose primary hospital or clinical fellowship appointments are made through departments at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. The
Shapiro Institute disburses the stipend to the Rabkin Fellow’s departmental budget in remuneration for the time to participate in the program.
While Rabkin Fellowships in Medical Education are open to all faculty members who have a primary appointment at HMS, and who are currently engaged in ongoing teaching activities within the HMS system, stipends for faculty who are on staff outside of BIDMC must be provided by the sponsoring Harvard-affiliated institution.
Selection process
All applications will be reviewed by the Fellowship Directors. Finalists will be invited for an interview with the Directors. Selection criteria include:
A track record of commitment to medical education and a current venue for teaching (e.g. medical students, residents, fellows)
Demonstrated interest in scholarly exploration and application of medical education principles
Clear rationale explaining how the Fellowship will help achieve one’s professional goals
Commitment to prepare for and actively participate in the weekly seminars
A feasible project proposal with direct applicability to the field of medical education and a commitment to complete the project
Fellows are chosen through a competitive process by a Rabkin Fellowship in Medical Education selection committee. In choosing the Fellowship class, attention is paid to group balance as well as discipline and institutional diversity. Clinical fellows likely to transition to faculty positions at
BIDMC will be given special consideration.
