HONOURS AND AWARDS Local Presentations of Honours: If a recipient of a National Honour does not wish to attend an Investiture at Buckingham Palace, then he or she can ask for the presentation to take place locally. The Lord-Lieutenant will present the medal on behalf of Her Majesty The Queen. The British Empire Medal (BEM): The BEM rewards an achievement or contribution of service to the community in a local area and is presented at an Investiture held at the Shire Hall at Lancaster Castle by the Lord-Lieutenant on behalf of Her Majesty the Queen. The Elizabeth Cross: The Elizabeth Cross and Memorial Scroll are granted to the Next of Kin of UK Armed Forces personnel who have died on operations or as a result of an act of terrorism in national recognition of their loss and sacrifice. Individual presentations are made to the next of kin either by the Lord-Lieutenant or a senior member of the Armed Forces. The Queen's Award For Voluntary Service: These Awards, which were inaugurated by The Queen to mark Her Majesty’s Golden Jubilee in 2002, recognise the vital role played by the voluntary sector in the community by rewarding excellence by the ‘unsung heroes’ of the voluntary world. The Award is an equivalent to an MBE for a group of volunteers who work in their local community for the benefit of others. The winners are announced in June each year and are presented with a certificate, signed by HM The Queen, and an exclusive commemorative crystal by the LordLieutenant at a ceremony held at County Hall. The Queen's Award For Enterprise On The Queen's Birthday (21st April) each year, a list is published of those companies that have received The Queen's Award for Enterprise which is awarded in three categories: International Trade Innovation Sustainable Development. The Lord-Lieutenant presents the Award and the Grant of Appointment to the Company at its workplace.
