COURSE DESCRIPTION: Introduces the knowledge of fetal anatomy, pathology and procedures for diagnostic medical sonography. Emphasis is placed on fetal anomalies and maternal complications throughout all three trimesters. Topics include: first trimester sonographic abnormalities including: diagnosis of embryonic abnormalities, placental hematomas, associated pelvic masses, and other sonographic findings; second and third trimester sonographic abnormalities including: hydrops, various trisomies, cranial and facial altering abnormalities, vertebral column abnormalities, thoracic cavity abnormalities, abdominal wall abnormalities, urinary tract abnormalities, extremity abnormalities, umbilical cord abnormalities, amniotic fluid volumes, and other miscellaneous congenital abnormalities; history and physical examination; related imaging, laboratory, and functional testing procedures; differential diagnosis; role of ultrasound in patient management; viability; and fetal therapy. COMPETENCY AREAS: 1) First Trimester sonographic abnormalities to include: Diagnosis of embryonic abnormalities, Placental hematomas, Associated pelvic masses, and other sonographic findings 2) Second and Third Trimester sonographic abnormalities to include: Hydrops, various Trisomies, Cranial and facial altering abnormalities, Vertebral column abnormalities, Thoracic cavity abnormalities, Abdominal wall abnormalities, Urinary tract abnormalities, Extremity abnormalities, Umbilical cord abnormalities, Amniotic fluid volumes, and other congenital abnormalities 3) History and Physical Examination 4) Maternal complications 5) Related Imaging, Laboratory and Functional testing procedures 6) Differential diagnosis 7) Role of ultrasound in patient management 8) Viability 9) Fetal therapy COURSE OBJECTIVES: FIRST TRIMESTER SONOGRAPHIC ABNORMALITIES TO INCLUDE: DIAGNOSIS OF EMBRYONIC ABNORMALITIES, PLACENTAL HEMATOMAS, ASSOCIATED PELVIC MASSES, AND OTHER SONOGRAPHIC FINDINGS Describe abnormal sonographic findings in the first trimester SECOND AND THIRD TRIMESTER SONOGRAPHIC ABNORMALITIES TO INCLUDE: HYDROPS, VARIOUS TRISOMIES, CRANIAL AND FACIAL ALTERING ABNORMALITIES, VERTEBRAL COLUMN ABNORMALITIES, THORACIC CAVITY ABNORMALITIES, ABDOMINAL WALL ABNORMALITIES, URINARY TRACT ABNORMALITIES, EXTREMITY ABNORMALITIES, UMBILICAL CORD ABNORMALITIES, AMNIOTIC FLUID VOLUMES, AND OTHER CONGENITAL ABNORMALITIES Describe possible abnormalities of the fetus in the second and third trimesters, including hydrops, trisomies, abnormalities involving cranial, facial, abdominal wall, thoracic cavity, urinary tract, skeletal umbilical cord, amniotic fluid volume, and other congenital abnormalities HISTORY AND PHYSICAL EXAMINATION List appropriate questions included when taking a history for a pregnant patient MATERNAL COMPLICATIONS Discuss possible complications for the pregnant patient including diabetes, medications, multiple gestations, antepartum and postpartum RELATED IMAGING, LABORATORY AND FUNCTIONAL TESTING PROCEDURES Explain additional testing procedures performed for suspected anomalies DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS List possible diagnoses the physician considers when reading an sonogram of abnormal obstetric images ROLE OF ULTRASOUND IN PATIENT MANAGEMENT Describe role(s) sonography plays in patient management FETAL DEMISE Describe the monographer’s role in detecting fetal demise FETAL THERAPY Describe current methods of treating the fetus prior to birth PREREQUISITES/COREQUISITES: DMS 201 CONTACT HOURS: 3 CREDIT HOURS: 3 REQUIREDTEXT: Diagnostic Ultrasonography, 6, Hagen-Anshert, ISBN:978-0323-02803-5 MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES: Required: 10 scantrons CLASSROOM POLICIES AND PROCEDURES: This course requires class participation of at least 5 hours per week and outside reading. Keeping current on homework assignments and problem solving is essential in this type of class. Assigned reading should be done prior to class so as to make proper use of classtime and assigned activities to be completed as directed by the instructor. Complete assignments on time. Incomplete assignments will NOT be accepted. Late assignments will NOT be accepted. Due dates are on your calendar and will be adhered to! To protect the integrity of the course, online quizzes / tests may be password protected and can be accessed as designated by the instructor. Every student is expected to be present on test day. If a student is absent for a scheduled test, you must wait until after your final exam is complete before the make-up test will be given. Only one make-up test will be allowed following the final. If you miss two or more tests during the quarter, the grade for the tests missed will be zero (“0”)! No exceptions!! No make-up quizzes will be given. There will be no cell phone usage during class time. All cell phones will be either turned off or put on vibrate. If you need to make a call or check messages, this will be done at the assigned break time. If there is an emergency that requires you to make a phone call, please ask instructor for permission. DISTRIBUTION OF GRADES: Lecture Test- 60% Homework, Quizzes-15% Final- 25% Tests will be scheduled throughout the quarter. . A grade of “C “or better is required to proceed in the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program.
