Admission Requirements 2012-13
Entry-Level Master of Science in Athletic Training
The Master of Science degree in Athletic Training is a limited-enrollment program. It is highly competitive and admission is not guaranteed simply upon satisfactory completion of all application and pre-requisite requirements. Applicants are evaluated and ranked on the following criteria:
1.
Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in the United States or its equivalent from a school in another country.
2.
Application and acceptance by ISU Graduate School
3.
Cumulative GPA (minimum of 3.0 for final 60 credits)
4.
GRE/MAT score (see guidelines below)
5.
Successful completion of the following required prerequisite courses with a grade of “C” or better in each course: a.
Anatomy and Physiology (1 year equivalent with lab component) b.
Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries (or equivalent) c.
Neuroscience (preferred) d.
General Nutrition or Sports Nutrition e.
Exercise Physiology f.
Biomechanics g.
Sport Psychology (or other upper division Psychology course)
6.
Evidence of current First Aid / CPR / AED for Health Care Provider certification
7.
Statement of Personal Interest in Athletic Training including the following: a.
Purpose for entering the program b.
Background and / or experiences in sports, athletic training, physical education or related areas c.
Short and long-term professional goals d.
Reasons for choosing to study at ISU
8.
Two Recommendations using the recommendation form (one must be from a faculty member)
9.
Documentation of observation hours (minimum of 50) with an Athletic Trainer. Note: For the first year ONLY (students entering Summer of 2013), this may be waived until
acceptance into the program.
10.
A successful interview with the Admissions Committee. Interviews will take place in mid-
March. Interviews are offered first to applicants who have met all admission criteria.
Applicants who do not meet all admission criteria may be granted an interview and given an opportunity to address deficiencies only if interview spots are available.
Applicants must also undergo a criminal background check and have a current (within 1 year) physical, verification of immunizations and/or titers, and PPD (within 1 year). Criminal background checks must be done through ISU Public Safety at the applicant’s expense. Conviction of a felony or other serious offense will likely result in denial of placement for clinical assignment, and consequently affect the student’s standing in the program. This is required on a yearly basis.
Required immunizations include Varicella, MMR, Tuberculosis (PPD), Hepatitis B, DPT / Td, and
Polio.
Applicants must have a background investigation performed between May 15 and September 15 of the application year. The ISU-approved online vendor for criminal background checks is
CertifiedBackground. Log into www.CertifiedBackground.com and click on “students.” Enter package code: id13. You will be directed to set up your Certified Profile account. The cost is

Classification of Graduate Students
Consistent with ISU’s Graduate School policy, Classified Status may be granted to graduates of accredited institutions who have earned the following:
GPA STANDARDIZED TEST
3.5 to 4.000 No standardized test (GRE/MAT) required
3.0 to 3.499 Minimum: 40
MAT th Percentile on at least one area of the GRE or 40 th Percentile on the
2.5 to 2.999 Minimum: Combined Verbal and Quantitative (V + Q) score of 1000 on GRE or
45 th Percentile on the MAT
Below 2.499 No Admission
Unclassified Status will not be granted for this program.
1. Tetanus with Pertussis Booster
Tdap Vaccination
1-time does of Tdap and current Td booster
2. Measles, Mumps, Rubella
MMR vaccination
2 doses OR positive titer
3. Hepatitis B Vaccination Series
3 doses AND positive titer
4. Varicella (Chicken Pox)
2 doses of Varicella vaccine OR positive titer
5. Tuberculosis (TB) skin test
1 skin test after May 15 of the application year. In addition, TB screening must be performed annually.
A titer is not needed if documentation of two MMR doses is provided.
Documentation of 2 doses of MMR vaccination or positive titer is required. If the titer is non-responsive, documentation of 2 doses of MMR vaccine is required.
Students must complete the three vaccination series OR at minimum, must have completed the first vaccination of the series before the immunization verification deadline.
Vaccination verification is required if titer immunity is not provided.
If t h e student has had chicken pox, a Varicella titer is required to verify immunity. If the titer is non-reactive, 2 doses of Varicella vaccine are required.
Students with a previously positive skin test OR have
had the BCG immunization: It is not recommended that the student receive another Tb skin test. Student must submit negative chest x-ray interpretation, letter from physician stating completion of antibiotic therapy, and/or letter from physician stating student does not have active
Tb.
Students with a baseline positive or a newly
recognized positive skin test: It is not recommended that the student receive another Tb skin test. Student must complete the following steps:
1. Evaluation by healthcare professional
a. Symptom screen
b. Chest x-ray

i. Serial follow-up chest x-rays are not recommended
for students with a previous positive skin test who
have documentation of a previous clear chest x-ray
unless they present with symptoms of TB or a
clinician recommends it.
c. Collection of sputum specimens, if applicable.
2. If Tb disease is diagnosed
a. Begin anti-tuberculosis treatment
3. If Latent Tb Infection (LTBI) is diagnosed
a. Treatment for LTBI –then annual symptom screens
b. If treatment has already been completed –then annual
Tuberculosis Screening Form is completed
