Patriot Project
(100 Points)
The independence of our nation was purchased with the blood of patriots. During this project you will be
assigned one of these patriots to research, describe in a report, and bring to life in a brief presentation. Explained below
are the expectations for your Patriot Project.
Our project will begin as each student is assigned a Revolutionary War patriot. Our class will spend three days
researching the patriots. Students will be responsible for conducting their research responsibly during this time.
Students should be on-task actively researching or working on their project the full three days we have available.
Next, each student will write a two- to three-page (2 – 3) typed paper, or three- to four-page (3 – 4) paper handwritten. The paper should reflect the important details of the patriot’s life and should emphasize the Revolutionary War
time. You can include information about other aspects of the patriot’s life, but these references should be few. Most of
the paper should relate specifically to the patriot’s life, accomplishments and contributions during the Revolution. One
paragraph (at least 7 sentences) in this paper should be dedicated to your explanation of why the patriot you are
assigned should be considered a patriot. You will have an entire report to write on your patriot, and this paragraph will
be only one paragraph of the report – not the entire report!
In addition to the written report, you will be creating a memento box for your patriot. The box should be about
the size of a shoebox and should be decorated with pictures and/or some brief information about your patriot. The box
should contain at least seven (7) souvenir items that refer to, or reflect your patriot’s life in some way. Each item should
be labeled with the item’s name and a description of why the item would have been important to your patriot. For
example, you could include a copy of the Declaration of Independence for Thomas Jefferson, or a horse to signify Paul
Revere’s midnight ride. The information for the souvenir box should be collected during the three days we spend
researching, so be sure to use your time wisely.
The final component of this project will be a brief presentation. The presentation should be no more than 3 – 5
minutes and should simply explain the items inside your memento box as well as who your patriot is and why they
should be considered a patriot.
Please use this sheet as you work to make sure you are meeting all of the project requirements. The rubric on
the back of this page will be collected with your written report and used to evaluate your success on this project.
Helpful information:
Written Report –
If hand-written – Blue/black ink, clearly legible, skip lines between lines of text, use only one
side of the page, do NOT write front and back. If typed – Times New Roman, size 12, doublespaced, 1 inch margins, MLA heading. Each student should use and cite at least 3 sources.
Memento Box –
This should be about the size of a shoebox, decorated on the outside with pictures/text – NOT a
diorama! Do NOT attach items to the inside of the box. All items should be removable. You
may include pictures if you choose, but there should be no more than 2 pictures inside each box.
Presentation –
3 – 5 minutes total. You do not need notecards, but you may have them if you want. Notecards
should be completed before you turn your project in.
