Undiscovered Biomes Group Project Introduction You are the chosen ones! You and a group of your colleagues have been selected to complete a very important mission: the discovery of a new biome. As scientists, it is your job to locate information about your new biome and keep a journal of your data to be sent back to the laboratory. You should focus on recording information related to the location, climate, animals, plants/vegetation and interesting facts about the biome. Biome List 1. Taiga (Boreal or Coniferous Forest) 2. Temperate (Deciduous) Forest 3. Tropical Rainforest 4. Desert 5. Pick One: Chaparral, or Savanna 6.Grasslands 7.Temperate Rainforest 8. Tundra 9. Marine/Ocean 10. Freshwater (Rivers, Swamps, Lakes The Process 1. You will be assigned a biome to research from the list above. 2. Individually, each member of the group will research an aspect of your biome. You must assign roles to decide who will complete each area of your research (Climate, Animal, Plant, Facts/Human Impact/) 3. The PowerPoint should be divided up into 7 slides Slide 1: Title Slide (Include Biome title, names of group members) Complete as a group Slide 2: Location Slide (Map of biome/ World Map- A map of the world showing only where your biome is located throughout the Earth. Identify least 5 countries/ locations of your biome. Must be colored or highly visible) Complete as a group. Slide 3: Climate Slide (Include Climatograph/climatogram A graph and explanation showing the average monthly precipitation and temperature) Also provide growing seasons, rainy seasons, dry seasons…) Assign an Individual to this Slide Slide 4: Biotic Factor Animal Slide (Include 4 animals of this biome, scientific names, adaptation that allows these organisms to survive better in your biome, also identify its trophic level: carnivores, herbivores, omnivores, decomposers, and scavengers) Assign an Individual to this Slide Slide 5: Biotic Factor Plant Slide (Include 3 plants of this biome, scientific names, adaptation that allows these organisms to survive better in your biome) Assign an Individual to this Slide Slide 6: Facts Slide (Include 5 interesting facts about your biome, something that wasn’t already covered in the other slides, also identify human impacts on this biome) Assign an Individual to this Slide Slide 7: Food Web (Food Web - A diagram of organisms and their place in food chain, found within the biome. Pictures/diagrams with common names are required. About 7-10 organisms total must be represented. (Must be created by you! Do not copy from the internet.) Complete as a group. 4. After all slides are completed on the PowerPoint, get together with your group compile all slides into one PowerPoint. (Each slide you did on your own should have only your name at the bottom) 5. Be ready to present your PowerPoint to the class Evaluation You will be evaluated in 2 ways: individually and as a group. Using the self/peer evaluation form tell what you think your individual grade should be. Justify your answer by telling about things you did to make the project successful. Include ways that you think you could improve. Next, tell what grade the group should receive. Give examples of why the group should receive this grade. Be sure to tell what you did to contribute to the group and what you can do to improve. For your group grade each slide is worth 2 points giving the entire presentation a point value of 20 points overall. Slide 1. Title Group 2. Location Group 3. Climate Individual:_______________ 4. Animal Individual:_______________ 5. Plants Individual:_______________ 6. Facts Individual:_______________ Complete (Every aspect covered) All Group Members Names/ Biome Name 5 Locations identified Map with only your biome Avg. Temperature / precipitation/ climate graph 5 animals/ adaptations listed for each / scientific names/ trophic levels 4 plants/ general adaptations listed/ scientific names 5 Facts not repeating info from previous slides 7. Presentation Notes All group members are taking notes during others presentations Presented On Time All 7 Slides in Correct Order Partial (Only some aspects covered) Missing either names or title of biome Missing some locations or map with other biomes Missing or incorrect climate information for this biome Missing either scientific names, trophic levels, adaptations or listed less than 5 animals Missing either scientific names, adaptations or listed less than 4 plants Less than 5 facts OR 5 facts but some info has been repeated Less than 7 organisms, no pictures, or arrows in wrong direction Presented Late Incomplete (Aspect is missing completely) Not Present All Slides present but out of order 1 group member is not taking notes during presentations Missing 3 Slides or More Not Present Not Present Not Present Not Present Not Present Not Present PowerPoint Not Presented 2 group members are not taking notes during presentations Additional Evidence Activities (Extra Credit Assignment or RETAKE!) Complete the research on a different biome. Compare and contrast your findings. Create a brochure including the facts from your biome. Put it in persuasive format. Write a story about how you would spend an additional day at this location Author a book on animals found in your biome. Use one of the resource links to capture pictures for your booklet
