Recycling on Tuesday, Feb 10
Tuesday, February 10th will be a recycling day. Families may drop off recyclables at the front gate between
8:00 and 9:00 a.m.
The following procedure should be followed for the preparation of recyclables:
- Almost all beverage containers are permitted as part of the recycling program.
- Milk/dairy containers are not permitted.
- Evergreen has requested that all caps, and straws be removed and the containers should be rinsed.
- Cardboard, paper, compost, etc. are NOT permitted as part of the Evergreen recycling program. .
Thanks to all parents for their participation in this important recycling program which helps to preserve our
environment and support Lakecrest.
Afternoon Pickup – Crosswalk caution
We currently do not have a crosswalk guard for the afternoon “pick up”. We do caution students to ensure
that they are careful when using the crosswalk in the afternoon, especially when the roads are posssibly
slippery. We request that parents of younger students ensure that they are accompanied when they use the
crosswalk, especially in the afternoon.
According to recent announcements from the St. John’s City Council Traffic Committee, there will be
reduced speed (30 km/hr) limits implemented for streets in front of elementary schools in September. The
City has been contacted to ensure that Lakecrest Independent School is included in the list of schools to
receive the new signage and reduced speed limits.
Pancake Day
On Tuesday, February 17, Lakecrest students, parents and teachers will start the day with a pancake
breakfast from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. Lakecrest chefs – our student council members - will be baking and serving
pancakes in the cafeteria for all who would like to attend.
Parents can skip breakfast at home on Tuesday and enjoy the Lakecrest Pancake Day event. We have
excellent chefs, coffee, juice, and a selection of chocolate chip, plain and other pancakes!!
Junior High Curling
Junior high students enjoyed curling at the Bally Hally Curing Club last month. Mr. Howell and Ms. King
have now made arrangements for additional curling sessions at the Club for grade 6, 7, 8, and 9 students. The
sessions will begin with the grade 8 and 9 students on the afternoon of Feb. 12th. Arrangements will be made
for bus transportation to and from the school after lunch. Other grade level dates will be announced shortly.
School Assemblies
There are specific dates which are assigned for certain school assemblies at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesdays.
These assemblies provide an opportunity for a particular grade level, to demonstrate to the whole school their
interpretation of an International Baccalaureate “attitude” or “learner characteristic”.
These attitudes and characteristics are promoted daily at Lakecrest and we encourage all students to
demonstrate them in learning and actions with one another, parents and teachers.
These assemblies are not “concerts”, but focus on students conveying a message about their learning activity
and/or one of the attitudes.
Parents are welcome to attend these assemblies especially when their child’s class is presenting. As indicated
below, Grade 3 will be presenting on Wednesday, February 11, and Grade 2 will present on Wednesday,
March 11.
