The contract for the research project ESS Moderator & Reflector System, with the German ministry, is still in progress. Therefore, only preparation work has been done in August.

TIK 3.1 (YB)

Cold Moderators

Optimization of the cold Moderator vessel in order to check producibility and preparation of drawings for the first test vessel have been made. In our workshops, the manufacturing of three test vessels will be started in September.

Some electron beam welding test are running.

 through welding tests with 1.5, 2 and 2.5 mm contact

 change of the kind of filler (foil instead a wire as a filler)

 beam deflection for the pipe connection

Concerning producibility, the guiding of the cold pipework has been optimized. At one point, a space of 40 mm in length between inlet- and outlet pipe is necessary to connect the pipework to the cold Moderator. Friction welding adapter (Aluminum- Steel - Invar) must be connected with the Invar pipework by hand welding. Therefore, Invar to Invar welding tests are necessary. The preparation of this test is running. A challenge is to get the 3.2 certificate for the filler.

Thermal Moderators

CAD Design is still in progress in order to simplify the flow guiding in the whole structure

Reflectors

No preparation work has been done in August.

Twister

The development process of the MR Plugs has been started. Regarding to the PDR Design the general functionality is defined.

The main functions are:

 to support the MR-vessels and reflectors

 to isolate the cold vessels with vaccum

 to provide the liquid hydrogen

 to provide cooled H2O to the premoderators

 to cool the whole structure

 to enable a rotational motion of 75° at the shaft of the structure.

Based on these requirements, a Concept is developed (Drawing 212-000060) and will be introduced at the initial Meeting in Jülch on 19.08.2015.

This concept contains some main dimensions and improved approach for the streaming protection (milled core in the shaft, labyrinth at the outside) and of the bearing.

An new bearing at the top of the shaft is shown.

The next main points are to specify the interface of the target wheel and the handling cask more precisely and also update the interface documents.

TIK 3.2 Cryogenic Cooling System (MK)

The draft specification of the hydrogen pumps has been developed and distributed on atlassian.

The pump test specification as appendix and an evaluation of cost vs. risk of such an additional test is under development.

Vendors for the eight bayonets with Johnston couplings have been contacted and possible solutions (irradiation resistive materials) have been discussed.

PDR documents checked and list of comments prepared. Introduction meeting preparation and wrap-up.

TIK 3.3 Helium Refrigerator (HQ)

A few additions were made to the specification of the helium refrigerator TMCP were made:

For the testing of the refrigerator and the transfer line, a “spool piece” is needed at the later location of the hydrogen cryostat. It was agreed that this spool piece would contain the two helium control valves as well as the mixer heater, which are taken out of the scope of the

CMS, and are now part of the scope of the helium refrigerator vendor.

This spool piece will finally become a part of the CMS cryostat, i.e. it will share the insulation vacuum with the cryostat.

The specification makes now the refrigerator supplier responsible for the control of the helium inventory of the long transfer lines.

The specification for the He/H2 heat exchanger does now include performance requirements of the test runs in Jülich (LN2, N2) and commissioning at ESS (He/He).

The technical part of the specification for the refrigerator is now complete; but it is not clear which formalities at ESS have to be clarified until the RFP can be sent out to potential vendors.
