A two-day celebration at Altona Library kicks off on 5 June with World Environment

pedalling, hear expert advice on composting, or talk wildlife with the unique
ensemble The Connies. The following day, bring the whole family down from 10am
onwards, enjoy the entertainment and swap stories from the last fifty years, and
enjoy the cake cutting and speeches from 12pm. Visit
http://libraries.hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au for more details.
R J Cooper Reserve
A new car park will make accessing R J Cooper Reserve easier and reduce
congestion in surrounding streets. Council will also install new pathways, park
furniture, garden beds, trees, soccer goals and will make improvements to the play
space.
Apex Park
The existing gravel car park at Apex Park will soon be sealed and a more formal car
park established to create 26 car spaces. Works should be completed by July and
during this time alternative parking can be found on the Esplanade or off Queen
Street at Doug Grant Reserve next to the Truganina Explosives Reserve.
Detox your home
Brake fluid, detergents, cleaning products and herbicides – these are the most
common items we receive each year. Between 8am and 4pm on 30 May you can
dispose of household chemicals safely without harming your family or the
environment. To use the free service, register online at
www.sustainability.vic.gov.au/detoxmobile or call 1800 353 233. The site address in
Altona will be provided once you register.
Strand
Douglas Parade works
Between now and mid-July there will be roadworks and parking restrictions along
Douglas Parade between Bunbury Street and Yarra Street. We are carrying out
important road rehab and drainage works including the installation of new
underground drainage, new kerbs and repairs to the road and footpaths.
Ann Street drainage
Underground drainage is being installed in Ann Street to assist in resolving ongoing
ponding issues in surrounding streets. Work should be completed by the end of
September. Check the Council website for information on traffic disruptions and
updates on the progress of works.
Port of Melbourne – Webb Dock
What’s that noise? A new automobile terminal is now being constructed at Webb
Dock, across the Yarra from Newport, with an expected completion date of late
2016. To find out more about the project, drop-in to an information session at 1
The Strand, Williamstown on 27 May (between 5.30pm and 7.30pm).
Willy Lit Fest
Now in its twelfth year, this year’s Williamstown Literary Festival will have you

life and comedy, events include panel discussions, in-depth interviews, author talks

Wetlands
Railway Avenue improvements
Last month Council held a consultation session with the community about what
trees should be planted along Railway Avenue. Together, community members and
Council came to an agreement that Lightwoods would be planted on the north side,
and Maples on the south, and we would like to thank all community members who
contributed to these discussions.
Lohse Street Reserve
There is good news on the way. The park will be officially opened on Friday 12 June
at 4pm, with all welcome to attend. Kids activities, music and local food will be part
of the celebration. Fencing will be kept up around the reserve until the official
opening to give the grass and new plants time to establish before we open to the
public. The new reserve features improved lighting, a new public toilet, a shelter
structure, new furniture, a children’s garden and new trees.
Alma Avenue improvements
Works at Alma Avenue shops have begun and are expected to be finished by the
end of June. These improvements will include revitalisation of planting beds, car
park linemarking, cleaning of existing paving, tree planting and new furniture.
Merton Street asphalting
You should notice a smoother drive along Merton Street, between Alma Avenue and
Queen Street, by the end of the week. We are resurfacing the road and extensive
traffic management will be in place while works are being completed.
A B Shaw Reserve
The flying fox and bird’s nest swing are on their way with construction of the new
playspace begun at A B Shaw. By August, the fence will be gone, construction will
be finished, and children and adults alike will be enjoying the exciting new space.
And the much loved carousel? It won’t be going anywhere.
