About Yuendumu
The first settlement at Yuendumu was established in 1946 by the
Australian Government to deliver rations and welfare services. In 1947
a Baptist mission began in Yuendumu and Yuendumu aboriginal
Reserve was claimed in 1952. By 1955, many Warlpiri people had
settled in the town. The reserve became aboriginal freehold land under
the Aboriginal Land Rights Act (Northern Territory) 1976 and the land
and area became the Yuendumu Aboriginal Land Trust area.
Yuendumu is on the border of Anmatyerre and Walpiri country.
Traditional ownership currently rests with families who collectively form
the Warlpiri Land Trust. Yuendumu is on the south eastern border of the
extent of traditionally owned Warlpiri land. Anmatyerre land extends to
the east, Pintubi/Luritja land to the south and Kukatja land to the west.
The Yuendumu community council administered the area.
In 2008 the Yuendumu Community Council was absorbed into the
Central Desert Council, which now provides local government to the
region.
Population
The population of Yuendumu and its surrounds in 2011 was approximately 687, of which 85%
were Indigenous.
Power and water
Electricity is supplied by a diesel generator. Chlorinated and fluoridated town water is supplied
by bore, and waste water is treated in sewerage ponds on the outskirts of town.

Air
Yuendumu can be accessed by air through chartered air services.
Road
Yuendumu is located 300km northwest of Alice Springs via the Tanami Road. Seats can be
purchased on the Bush Bus. The Bush Bus travels out to the community on Tuesday and
Thursdays – a seat can be purchased to travel into and out of the community to Alice Springs.
Local government
The Central Desert Regional Council oversees the administration of local governance and
delivers community services including corporate and community management, road and
building maintenance and waste management.
Land tenure
Yuendumu is located within the Yuendumu Aboriginal Land Trust and is Aboriginal Land under
the NT Land Rights Act (NT) 1976.

Warlpiri Youth Development Aboriginal Corporation (WYDAC)
WYDAC runs the Mt Theo program. The program was started by the Yuendumu community in
1993 and has since broadened in nature and scope to provide a comprehensive program of
youth development and leadership, diversion, respite, rehabilitation, and aftercare.

Yuendumu Women’s Centre (YWCAC) is a meeting place, a resource centre and provider of
advocacy services for the women of Yuendumu and their families. They support/offer cultural
programs aimed at encouraging young people to learn traditional ways.
YWCAC manage the Yuendumu Women's Safe House at Lot 487. Family and Domestic
Violence is critical. The Board of Directors, members and Manager maintain involvement in
community activities and the networks around Family and Domestic Violence.
YWCAC manage the School Nutrition Program providing school lunches. YWCAC also operate
a Laundromat and Op Shop. They manage a Trachoma Program funded by Fred Hollows
