Holes Inferences
Page #66 : “ ‘Just keep digging until someone says otherwise,’ Mr. Pendanski said.
Then he smiled. ‘But if I were you, Rex, I wouldn’t dig too hard.’ ”
Inference that needs to be made: Mr. Pendanski is impressed with what X-Ray
has given him, and he is likely to be rewarded the rest of the day off.
Text information needed to make inference: Mr. Pendanski smiled at X-Ray. He
also told him not to dig too hard.
Background Information needed: Mr. Pendanski had not smiled very often or
told anyone not to work hard within the reading. These uncharacteristic traits hint
to the reader that something unusual is going to happen.
Page # 94: Then he turned to Zero, who had been quietly digging in his hole since
Stanley’s return. Zero’s hole was smaller than all the others.
Inference that needs to be made: Zero dug Stanley’s hole for him when he was
gone.
Text information needed to make inference: Zero’s hole was smaller than the
others.
Background Information needed: If Zero’s hole was much smaller than the
others than he must have used his time to dig Stanley’s hole for him.
Page # : “Zero’s “confession” seemed to bring him some relief. The muscles in his
face relaxed. As he drifted into sleep, Stanley softly sang him the song that had been
in his family for generations .”
Inference that needs to be made: Zero was the one who stole the shoes that
Stanley was accused of stealing.
Text information needed to make inference: Zero said earlier “I didn’t know
about the shoes”. He also apologized to Stanley and the book uses the word
“confession”.
Background Information needed: To confess something means to admit
wrongdoing. A confession will often bring relieve stress and can release the burden
of carrying a secret.
