Head Coach’s Performance Appraisal Rubric
Executive Summary
The Head Coach’s Performance Appraisal (HCPA) will be based on qualitative and quantitative
data. This comprehensive approach examines the holistic view of a coach’s performance
throughout the fiscal year. The quantitative data will provide an overall performance score. The
qualitative data will provide the necessary information in order to create a developmental plan
and goals for following year.

Quantitative and qualitative data will be gathered by the student-athletes feedback for that
particular team. The student-athlete evaluation will be online.

Leadership encompasses an individual’s ability to motivate and empower others to
achieve common team goals. Leadership is displayed through an individual’s work ethic,
decision-making ability, and intrinsic motivation in overcoming challenges to succeed in all
areas of life. This study will focus on the following leadership attributes that student athletes can
acquire by participating in intercollegiate athletics – composure, confidence, character,
perseverance, and the ability to inspire and empower others.
Quantitative and qualitative data will be gathered by direct observation of and
communication with the head coach by the Athletic Director throughout the fiscal year.

The Department of Athletics stresses the importance of striving to demonstrate excellent
sportsmanship while representing the University in all athletic contests. Sportsmanship is a set
of behaviors to be exhibited by student-athletes, coaches, game officials, administrators and fans

in athletics competition. These behaviors are based on values, especially respect and integrity.
To promote the character development of student-athletes and assistant coaches, head coaches
will adhere to such fundamental values as respect, fairness, civility, honesty and responsibility.
Furthermore, all head coaches will be responsible for ensuring that his/her players and assistant
coaches practice good sportsmanship while engaging in practices, games, and in the community.
Quantitative and qualitative data will be gathered by direct observation of and
communication with the head coach by the Athletic Director throughout the fiscal year.

University of the Sciences recognizes that the dedication, efficiency, and performance of
coaches are critical factors in achieving excellence. Objective, constructive feedback is essential
to the professional development and growth of our coaches. The Recruitment and Game/Practice
Management Review will focus on the individual’s demonstrated skills and abilities and the level
of performance.
Quantitative and qualitative data will be gathered by direct observation of and
communication with the head coach by the Athletic Director throughout the academic year.

Overall score from each evaluation will be added and divided by four to formulate the
overall score. (OSE + Ls + Ss + GPRM = Total/4)
95% - 100%: Role Model – Consistently demonstrates competency expertly and is a role model
for others. This is seen as a stand-out strength for an individual. Results are very effective and
influential.
85% - 94%: Advanced - Consistently demonstrates competency well. This is seen as strength for
this individual and the results are very effective with good influence.

70% – 84%: Competent – Consistently demonstrates competency. Results and influence are
effective. Needed adjustments are far and few in between.
60% - 69% - Needs Development - A gap is identified in the demonstration of the competency.
Results may be inconsistent or ineffective. Action is needed to address and improve gap.
0% - 59% - Position within the University will be revaluated.
