Dear ParishionersPlease sign up for our next Parish Excursions
1) on Lolley the Trolley and the Goodtime III on
August 17 in Cleveland (transportation provided);
or 2) if you like something more laid back, then
come join fellow parishioners on Saturday, August
24 for a night at Blossom Music Center for a
Classical Concert of Beethoven and Shubert by the
Cleveland Orchestra.
Thanks to our Knights of Columbus Council
547 for sponsoring the meal and tickets to the
Aero’s Baseball Game and to Ruth and Dick
Reinhart for once again organizing the night.
Every month you find in your envelope
packets a pink envelope for Parish Expenses. This is
for unexpected maintenance needs on the facilities.
Because of your support to this effort but no parish
needs this month, we purchased two 30” oscillating
fans for the church. Let’s feel how they work.
The location for Confessions is difficult for
some who cannot climb steps, so the Confessional
closest to the Blessed Mother Altar will be restored
for use. It will have chair (no kneeler), a fan, and a
screen for those who wish anonymity.
Due to a schedule conflict, we are unable to
have Adoration and Benediction of the Blessed
Sacrament this First Friday from 1-3pm.
I am working on an Adult Faith Formation
Program for the coming year. A couple things are
being considered. Six 30-minute DVD talks by Fr.
Haase, OFM on Spirituality; a DVD Series on the
Second Vatican Council to close the Year of Faith;
and a Scripture Series. Please let me know if you
have some interests that we could Grow in Faith.
PSR Registration is right around the corner.
PLEASE Stay Tuned. Once again this year, if you are
responsible for the Religious Education of a child
between K and H.S. Senior. I need to know where
or how your child is receiving their formation in
their Christian Faith within the Catholic Church. We
can assist your child and family.
As you may have heard there are a number
of new Pastors being assigned to Akron parishes.
Four priests were ordained in May for the entire
diocese, and five priests in the Akron area alone are
eligible and are entering retirement. Please pray
for priestly vocations – yes! and more so – please
encourage them in someone who is attentive to
God in their daily life.
Peace, Fr. Dan

St. Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153),
the Patron of our Parish (huge center statue)
Saint Bernard, the founding abbot of
Clairvaux Abbey in France, was one of the
most commanding Church leaders in the
early 1100s, as well as one of the greatest
spiritual masters of all times. He was born
in Fontaines-les-Dijon in 1090 and entered
the Abbey of Citeaux at age 22. He brought
thirty of his relatives with him, including five
of his brothers-- his youngest brother and
his widowed father followed later. After
receiving a monastic formation, he was sent
in 1115 at age 25 to begin a new monastery:
Clairvaux, meaning the Valley of Light. At
this time, he also published a series of
sermons on the Annunciation. These marked
him not only as a gifted spiritual writer but
also revealed his development of Mary's role
as a mediator.
Bernard's spiritual writing as well as his
extraordinary personal magnetism began to
attract many to Clairvaux and the other
Cistercian monasteries, leading to 300 new
foundations. (He personally saw to the
establishment of sixty-five new monasteries
during his 38 years as abbot.) His dynamism
soon reached far beyond monastic circles.
He was sought as an advisor and mediator
by the ruling powers of his age. He helped
to bring about the end of a papal schism
which arose in 1130 with the election of the
antipope Anacletus II. It cost Bernard eight
years of skillful mediation and laborious
travel. At the same time he labored for
peace and reconciliation between England
and France and other lesser nobles of
Europe. His influence mounted when his
spiritual pupil was elected pope in 1145. At
Pope Eugene’s command he preached the
Second Crusade. In his last years he rose
from his sickbed to defend the Jews against
a savage persecution in the Rhineland.
Although he suffered from constant physical
debility, and was abbot in a monastery that
housed several hundred monks, he found
time to compose many spiritual works that
still speak to us today. He laid out a solid
foundation for the spiritual life in his works
on grace and free will, humility and love. As
a theologian he responded to the dangerous
teachings of Peter Abelard, of Gilbert de la
Porree and of Arnold of Brescia. With great
simplicity and poetic grace Bernard wrote of
the deepest experiences of the mystical life.
His masterpiece, Sermons on the Song of
Songs, became normative for all succeeding
spiritual writers. For Pope Eugene he wrote
on how to be a pope, and it became the
bedside reading of Bl. Pope John XXIII and
many other pontiffs through the centuries.
Bernard died at Clairvaux - August 20, 1153
and was canonized a Saint in 1174.
