Cost: $70.00 per person Register by MONDAY, JULY 29 call the Parish Office at 330-253-5161 or Ruth Reinhart at 330-928-7944 (35 Person MINIMUM for this Event to Occur) St. Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153), the Patron of our Parish (huge center statue) Saint Bernard, the founding abbot of Clairvaux Abbey in France, was one of the most commanding Church leaders in the early 1100s, as well as one of the greatest spiritual masters of all times. He was born in Fontaines-les-Dijon in 1090 and entered the Abbey of Citeaux at age 22. He brought thirty of his relatives with him, including five of his brothers-- his youngest brother and his widowed father followed later. After receiving a monastic formation, he was sent in 1115 at age 25 to begin a new monastery: Clairvaux, meaning the Valley of Light. At this time, he also published a series of sermons on the Annunciation. These marked him not only as a gifted spiritual writer but also revealed his development of Mary's role as a mediator. Bernard's spiritual writing as well as his extraordinary personal magnetism began to attract many to Clairvaux and the other Cistercian monasteries, leading to 300 new foundations. (He personally saw to the establishment of sixty-five new monasteries during his 38 years as abbot.) His dynamism soon reached far beyond monastic circles. He was sought as an advisor and mediator by the ruling powers of his age. He helped to bring about the end of a papal schism which arose in 1130 with the election of the antipope Anacletus II. It cost Bernard eight years of skillful mediation and laborious travel. At the same time he labored for peace and reconciliation between England and France and other lesser nobles of Europe. His influence mounted when his spiritual pupil was elected pope in 1145. At Pope Eugene’s command he preached the Second Crusade. In his last years he rose from his sickbed to defend the Jews against a savage persecution in the Rhineland. Although he suffered from constant physical debility, and was abbot in a monastery that housed several hundred monks, he found time to compose many spiritual works that still speak to us today. He laid out a solid foundation for the spiritual life in his works on grace and free will, humility and love. As a theologian he responded to the dangerous teachings of Peter Abelard, of Gilbert de la Porree and of Arnold of Brescia. With great simplicity and poetic grace Bernard wrote of the deepest experiences of the mystical life. His masterpiece, Sermons on the Song of Songs, became normative for all succeeding spiritual writers. For Pope Eugene he wrote on how to be a pope, and it became the bedside reading of Bl. Pope John XXIII and many other pontiffs through the centuries. Bernard died at Clairvaux - August 20, 1153 and was canonized a Saint in 1174.
