There is no charge for doing research at the Friends Library, but contributions are appreciated and tax deductible. We are open M-F 8:30-4:30 and Saturdays 10 AM -1 PM when the College is in session. We strongly suggest that you call in advance to confirm Saturday hours. You need to fill out a registration form and present photo identification. This identification will be kept with your registration card while you are using the Library; it will be returned to you when you are ready to leave and have returned all materials to the Reference desk. In addition, please sign the guest book every day that you come into the Library. All personal property not essential to research must be deposited in the closet. Staff can lock away valuables. Follow staff instructions for requesting and using materials. Use pencils only. When using manuscripts, the table must be clear of all materials except a pencil and a single sheet of paper. For preservation or privacy reasons, some materials may be restricted. Please return all materials to the Reference desk. We ask that you not reshelve any materials. Any materials you wish to photocopy must be approved by a staff person first, and may be subject to copyright restrictions. Photo reproduction policies and fees are posted on the reverse of this page. Items may not be requested after 4:15 PM. No food or drink allowed in the Friends Library. Restrooms and public phones are located in the main library. Please consult map in the genealogical guide on every table. When leaving the Friends Library, please show your materials to assistant at the Reference desk and retrieve your photo identification. Genealogical researchers are strongly encouraged to read through the guide to genealogical research at our library in order to acquaint themselves with our library and with researching Quaker ancestors. We are happy to provide you with information about the Library's genealogical service~ if you wish to have further research done for you. Thank you for your consideration. Photo reproduction Policies & Fees 1. Friends Historical Library allows photocopying for research purposes only. Certain restricted or fragile material cannot be copied. The Library may limit the number of pages or items which can be photocopied from any publication, manuscript collection, or archival group. 2. Copyrighted material may only be reproduced in accordance with regulations as specified by copyright law. Researchers using the Library assume legal responsibility for observing these regulations. 3. Reproductions of publications, manuscripts, photographs, and other library material cannot be used by researchers for publications without due regard for copyright and other legal restrictions. Permission to Copy does not constitute permission to publish. Publication privileges may be secured only upon the joint authorization of the director of Friends Historical Library and the holder of the literary property rights. 4. Visitors to Friends Historical Library may Copy certain material personally at the photocopier in the Swarthmore College Peace Collection. Photocopies from microfilm may be made at the microfilm reader/ printer Located in the Friends Historical Library. Rates for photocopying by visitors are as follows: 8-1/2" x 11" (recycled paper) 15¢ per copy 8-1/2" x 11" (acid-free paper) 20¢ per copy 8-1/2" x 14" (acid-free paper) 25¢ per copy 11" x 17" (acid-free paper) 30¢ per copy Microfilm reader-printer 50¢ per copy Please note that these rates are below cost. We therefore ask you to include in your count of Copies made all your own mistakes. Exclude those that are unacceptable because of machine problems. Fragile or tightly bound materials may or may not be able to be copied by Friends Historical Library staff. Staff copying rates will apply. 5. For material that must be copied by Friends Historical Library staff (including all Mail requests), charges will be made at the following rates: Photo copies: A minimum fee of $5 covers five pages of Copy (including postage). Additional pages are 50¢ per exposure. Photocopies from microfilm: The minimum fee of $5.00 Covers three photo prints. Additional prints are $1.00 each. Reproductions of images: Rates by special arrangement, to be determined according to the nature of the request. 6. Charges for photo reproduction are solely in payment for services rendered, including actual copying charges, postage, and staff time required to process the request. The Library also normally charges a use fee for each image from its collection published in any format. This fee may be waived for certain academic and non-profit uses. 7. Checks should be made payable to the Friends Historical Library of Swarthmore College and sent to Friends Library. Checks made payable to and sent to "Swarthmore College" do not reach us for deposit in our account and payment therefore is not credited to the payer. 8. Large orders (more than 25 copies) are subject to the approval of the Curator and the availability of staff time. Rates for such orders are determined by special arrangement and may be higher than the charges listed above.
