Shell Canada is seeking an External Relations (ER) Manager to lead the external relations and internal communications team for Shell Albian Sands (SAS). SAS encompasses Shell’s oil sands mining operations in Fort McMurray, Alberta, a large, complex operation with over 3,000 employees and regular contractors from diverse backgrounds, operating 24/7 in a challenging geography.

The right person for this role will relish being where the action is “at the table” with the Albian leadership team as it transforms the business against the backdrop of today’s challenging environment. Success depends on delivering responsible oil sands development to ensure our license to operate and grow. Your role is to deliver a unique perspective and skillset to business decision-making, bringing the outside in, and the inside out. You understand how to mobilize your team to support and influence the achievement of business objectives by making a positive impact on our diverse communities. You do this internally with our employees and contractors, and externally with local and fence-line neighbours including key relationships with Aboriginal communities and partners, suppliers, customers, joint venture partners, and wider society.

A day in the life of a Shell Canada Albian Sands Employee Relations Manager:

Reporting to the Calgary-based Head of Heavy Oil External Relations, you lead an eight-member team to manage non-technical risk, build and maintain external relationships, and enhance

Shell’s brand and reputation, with a focus on how this plays out in the region and inside our operations.

External focus:

Accountable for an integrated strategy for social performance, social investment, non-technical risk, regulatory consultation, issues management, local content and stakeholder relations at the asset level.

Understand the opportunities, challenges, trends, issues and risks in the external landscape through stakeholder sensing and engagement.

Ensure social and reputational opportunities and risks are assessed at an early stage, mitigated or leveraged, and integrated into business plans.

 Communicate and leverage Shell’s capabilities, achievements and thought leadership to build preference with partners, customers and communities.

Build and maintain key relationships with external stakeholders, including negotiation and implementation of commitments, and management of a strategic site visitor engagement program

(tours).

Often called upon to serve as the face of Shell locally, while supporting the external engagement and profile of other Albian leaders.

 Work effectively within Shell’s global guidelines and leverage country / global expertise to deliver local benefits.

Internal focus:

Guide a plan of strategic internal communications advice, counsel and tactics that align employees to deliver business targets.

Oversee the delivery and continuous improvement of Shell Albian Sands ’ (SAS) integrated internal communications delivery model .

Support effective internal change management initiatives, understanding and mitigating any effects on Shell’s reputation and commitment to local net benefits.

 Work effectively with Shell’s global guidelines and capitalize on country/global internal communications centres of excellence.

Build employee pride in Shell, Shell Albian Sands and leadership in the community, continuing to foster visibility and voluntarism.

 Maintain team’s capacity to serve as “go-to” for site advice on Shell’s global brand standards, disclosure protocols and media relations.

Active member of site crisis response team.

Please Note:

This position is on a 4x3 shift (Monday - Thursday; 10hrs/day) in Shell’s Fort McMurray town office and commuting 75km to Shell Albian Sands regularly (at least once / week).

 The incumbent is “on call” 24/7 given the key emergency and crisis response requirements of the job.

Flexibility is also required as important relationship building events in local communities often take place on evenings / weekends.

We are looking for someone with the following skills, experiences and qualifications:

You must be legally entitled to work in Canada by way of Canadian Citizenship, Permanent

Residency, or a valid work permit. This would authorize you to work for Shell in the occupation for which you are applying and provide confirmation and proof of status if an offer is advanced.

 Minimum Bachelor’s degree in communications, political science or other related discipline.

Minimum 15 years of directly related experience, preferably in a large business with a complex network of Aboriginal and other external stakeholders.

Demonstrable understanding of the business, gained in operating company or global business environment, with ability and professional interest to constantly refine this understanding.

Must be able to think strategically and translate business objectives into multi-channel strategies / plans with record of partnering effectively with the business.

Ability to secure the trust of senior leaders and build relationships with external stakeholders, often achieving results though indirect reports, project teams and external industry / multistakeholder groups.

Very strong understanding of non-technical risk integration and management with experience in external stakeholder relationship management

Works across cultures and diverse backgrounds and virtual teams.

Strong communications background with track record experience in internal communications, external affairs and/or media management.

Self-starter showing high degree of personal initiative, drive and desire to come up with new, business-targeted, creative solutions

Proven skills to deliver under time pressure.

Proven strong English writing skills, with knowledge of how to create effective content.

Knowledge of brand development and management.

Experience dealing with crisis management.

Knowledge of media relations.

Proven experience managing projects and vendors.

Record of contributing to the community professionally and personally.
