2014 Kahn Summer Speaker Series
Presentation: In this day-long event, Dr. McGregor will present a two-pronged seminar
intended for speech-language pathologists in preschool and school settings. This talk
will address developing children’s language in school and play contexts. It will begin by
exploring play from historical, scientific, and clinical vantage points. Topics include
types of play, the developmental course of play, play among children with disabilities,
and the role of play in communication, speech, and language development. The second
part of this talk will address how to provide effective vocabulary intervention for
school-age children. Topics will include what it means to know a word, the time course
of word learning, the mechanisms of word learning, how learning, memory, and usage
are related, and how all these factors affect vocabulary learning and instruction. Goal
selection, teaching strategies, teaching contexts will be explored and commercially
available resources that satisfy evidence-based principles of intervention will be
reviewed.
Speaker: Karla McGregor, Ph.D., is a Professor in the Department of Communication
Sciences and Disorders and director of the DeLTA Center at the University of Iowa, an
Honorary Professor at the University of Sydney, and a Fellow of the American SpeechLanguage-Hearing Association.

Sponsorship: The Kahn Summer Speaker Series is funded by the Division of Communication
Disorders through the generosity of the Barbara Kahn Foundation for Speech Correction. The
Summer Series is a token of our appreciation to the dedicated SLPs who provide our students
practicum experiences. The Kahn foundation was initially established in 1953 by Ruby and Albert
Kahn in memory of their daughter, Barbara Kahn. Barbara was the first student to be awarded a B.A.
in Speech Correction in 1952. For over fifty years, this fund has helped support student scholarships,
instructor and researcher salaries, and supplies and equipment in the Division of Communication
Disorders.
The Kahn Foundation has the power to accept gifts and bequests. If you would like to contribute
