BACKGROUND The Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation located in Saratoga Springs, New York was founded as a not-for-profit organization in 1977. Its mission is to promote the preservation and enhancement of the architectural, cultural and landscaped heritage of Saratoga Springs. The Foundation does so through advocacy, educational programs, special events and technical assistance. During its early years the Foundation was instrumental in listing several neighborhoods of the city on the National Register of Historic Places, comprising more than 1,250 individual structures. The Foundation also implemented a façade easement program to restore and protect historic building facades of downtown businesses. For more than 35 years the Foundation’s special initiatives have included: advocacy to preserve and reuse the historic residences of the old Skidmore campus on Union Avenue, Circular and Regent Streets; restoration of the Gideon Putnam Burial Ground; restoration and reuse of the Adirondack Railroad Station at 117 Grand Avenue; survey the city’s historic buildings for maintenance and condition issues resulting in a regularly updated endangered buildings list; renovation and restoration of seven historic properties on Beekman Street as part of the New York State Main Street Program; completing the cultural resources survey at the Saratoga Race Course; and most recently, undertaking the restoration of the of the Spirit of Life and Spencer Trask Memorial in Congress Park in partnership with the City of Saratoga Springs. Efforts such as these have been possible because of the Foundation’s ability to secure government and foundation grants as well as individual and business contributions. Each year the Foundation offers educational programs and sponsors special events to foster an increased public awareness and appreciation of the importance of historic preservation to our community’s quality of life. Examples include: lectures throughout the year, regular “Preservation Matters” feature articles in The Saratogian, the Summer Sunday Stroll Program, the Candlelight House Tour, and TRASK: Preserving Saratoga Springs through Art. The Foundation is membership-based with a professional full-time staff of two that is accountable to a Board of Directors which meets monthly to provide strategic oversight and guidance, set policy, monitor finances, and discuss program development and implementation. ART SALES Artists set all prices. The Trask Art Show is a fundraiser the continued conservation and restoration of Saratoga Springs. Therefore, artists are encouraged to price their work to sell. Artists are to provide an opening bid price and a retail sale price for each piece. The organizers will set the bidding increments at their discretion. HELPFUL GUIDELINES: Opening Bid Price—The price at which the bidding will begin on your piece at the silent auction. The opening bid price should correspond to the lowest price you would accept for the work. Art entered in similar events has been offered at a wide range of prices. There is no low or high price limit, however artists should be aware that the average price of art sold has been approximately $50—$400. Works of art that have been most likely to sell have had opening bid prices under $200. Works priced higher than $900 have generally not sold well. Opening bid prices under $200 are suggested to increase the likelihood of sale. Retail Sale Price—Should be higher than the opening bid price and the price at which the art would sell in a retail setting or gallery. Closeout Price—If your artwork has not sold by a designated time, you may choose to offer a closeout price so that the sale of your work may benefit the Restoration fundraising campaign. This can be set at your discretion as the artist. “Buy It Now” Price— Artwork will be assigned a “Buy It Now” price for the Sneak Peek Preview Party, which will be a percentage ABOVE the retail sale price assigned by the artist. Buyers will purchase works through the silent auction process and will be checked out at the event by the sales staff. Buyers will be allowed to take their purchased works at the end of the event. Artists will receive 50% of the proceeds of any sales of their works, unless the work has been fully donated. The artist gives the organizers the exclusive right to sell exhibited work for the duration of the event. Payments to artists will be mailed to the address provided on the entry form within 30 days of the event. 10 Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation 112 Spring Street, Suite 203 | Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 (518) 587-5030 | www.saratogapreservation.org H.
