TUBE
Tubes containing anticoagulants must be filled completely and mixed immediately after
collection by gently inverting the tube several times. Gold or red top vacuum (serum) tubes
contain clot activators and should also be mixed to accelerate clotting. Serum tubes with clot
activators may be centrifuged about 20 minutes after collection.
For coagulation tests draw a few milliliters of blood into a vacuum collection tube and discard.
Then collect a completely filled blue top citrate tube. Mix by gently inverting several times,
immediately after collection.
To ensure accurate results all the specimens have to be delivered to the laboratory within
maximum 2 hours from collection, unless stricter rules apply. The transport temperature for
specimens in transit to the laboratory has to be room temperature, unless otherwise specified
above. When specimens cannot be delivered to the laboratory within 2 hours from collection
please contact the laboratory at 212 434 2300 for temperature storage recommendations.
Blood collection tubes in use include:
MINT
4.5 ml tube with lithium heparin and a gel barrier (plasma)
GOLD
5 ml tube with gel barrier and clot activator (serum)
RED
6 ml with clot activator (serum)
BLUE
5 ml tube (4.5 ml draw) with citrate anticoagulant
GRAY
6 ml tube with fluoride and oxalate

3ml tube with EDTA anticoagulant
DARK GREEN
4 ml tube with heparin anticoagulant
GREINER
2 ml partial fill blue top tube containing 3.2% Sodium Citrate.
The tubes must be filled to its intended whole blood capacity (indicated
by small black line).
Minimum volume for each test, unless otherwise specified above:
 1 ml of whole blood, serum or plasma for chemistry tests
 2 ml urine for urinalysis (macroscopic only)
 3 ml urine for urinalysis (macroscopic and microscopic)
 2 ml body fluids for chemistry and cell count
 3 ml whole blood on EDTA for CBC (The tube must be more than half full for proper
anticoagulant ratio. For pediatrics, draw blood in a MICROTAINER. Do not draw a small
volume into a standard VACUTAINER).
