I. Parental Involvement Policy
The School Leadership Team (SLT) is a group of staff members and parents who
participated in the development of the Piney Grove Parental Involvement Policy (policy
attached). The policy reflects Components II through XII taken from Parental
Involvement Section 1118 of No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) and how they will be
implemented. Regular meetings of the SLT throughout the year will ensure the
implementation of the policy components. Members of the SLT are:

The district Parental Involvement Policy and the Piney Grove Parental Involvement
Policy will be available in the Title I Notebook in the front office as well as on the
school’s website.
II. Annual Information Meeting
Our Title I Annual Meeting will be held on Tuesday Sept. 25, 2012. These meetings will
be held in conjunction with our Curriculum Night. Translators will be available for LEP
parents as well as translated handouts. A year end meeting/survey will allow feedback
and suggestions from parents and staff.
III. Flexible meeting times
Meetings will be held during the school day and evenings to meet parent’s needs.
Public meeting locations (i.e. apartment & neighborhood club houses) will be used to
offer another opportunity for parents. Child care may be provided.
IV. Title I Part A Planning
Parents are invited to participate in the planning, review and improvement of the Title I
program throughout the school year. Information on ways to be involved will be
available in the Title I notebook which will be housed in the front office, posted on
school website, and through other school communication means (newsletters, agendas,
Connect Ed calls). Parents and community members are encouraged to participate in
the School Leadership Team. Annual Title I meeting will be held in September and a
year end meeting/survey will be conducted in May to receive feedback from parents.
V. Parent Information and Opportunities
Curriculum night will be held on September 25, 2012 immediately after the Title I
Annual Meeting. Each grade level will discuss the NCSCOS curriculum, state and local
assessments used to measure student progress and proficiency levels expected for each grade
level. Parents will have the opportunity to learn ways to improve the academic achievement of
their children. First quarter conferences are scheduled on October 29th with 100% participation
required. Teachers have been given the flexibility to meet up to one week prior to this
conference date or one week after in an attempt to accommodate parents with challenging
schedules. For those parents who are not able to attend at Piney Grove, home visits or phone
conferences will be utilized. Parent/teacher conferences are encouraged through out the year
on an as-needed basis. Translators will be available for translation. Suggestions and
participations, as appropriate, in decisions relating to the education of their child are
encouraged. NC School Report Card will be distributed to parents and also available on line.
Open door policy will allow parents opportunities to meet with staff as well as participate in
their child’s class. Two parent volunteer orientation meetings were held on September 20th at
6:00 p.m. and also on September 21st at 9:30 a.m. to explain volunteer opportunities within the
school and PTA. On going information will be provided to parents throughout the year via
school wide and grade level newsletters, flyers, and Connect Ed calls.
VI. School-Parent compact
The School Leadership Team (SLT), made up of staff members and parents, will develop
the Family/School Compact (copy attached). This agreement between the parent,
student, teacher and administrative team clearly outlines everyone’s responsibility in
the learning process. The compact will be distributed to all families during first quarter.
100% participation from all families will be required.
VII. Building Parent Involvement Capacity
Parents will be provided the following assistance to further their involvement in their
child’s academic success: curriculum description and explanation during Curriculum
Night (9/25/12); Agendas (gr. 1-5), Communication folders (Pre-K & Kindergarten)
facilitate two-way communication between teachers & parents; Parent University and
in-house workshops to provide parents with academic success information; offer
opportunities at a variety of times (morning, afternoons, evenings, and possibly
weekends) and locations other than the school such as community facilities; Title I
Parent Resource Center; Parent Assistant (gr. 3-5).
Staff will have professional development opportunities through in-service, shared
resources on increased family and school communication from Family & Community
Services professional development workshops. Community Partnership meetings will be
held quarterly to engage community-based organizations and businesses. Translation
will be provided to reach all ELL families. Title I resources will fund a full time
Family/School Advocate and a Behavior Modification Technician.
VIII. LEP and Disabled Parents
Spanish translation of communication via newsletter, flyers, and Connect Ed phone
messages. Provide translators for parent/teacher conferences and other events as
needed. Our school is ADA accessible and will make other accommodations as needed
for our disabled parents.
IX. Reservation of Funds: Not less than 1% of the LEA’s allocations SHALL be
reserved to carry out parent involvement activities, including family literacy
and parenting skills. (95% of this allotted to individuals Title I schools)
CMS Title I Office will provide funding reserved for parental involvement activities in
accordance with No Child Left Behind Act.
X. Parent Request
Parent’s suggestions, as appropriate, will be considered and encouraged when making
decisions concerning parent activities.
XI. Annual Evaluation
In September and May, all parents will be asked for feedback and involvement in
evaluating the content and effectiveness of the parental involvement policy. Efforts will
be made through personal phone calls, newsletters, and during family events to recruit
parent’s participation on the School Leadership Team.
