It is so important that we continue our celebration for the entire fifty days. Easter continues for us way past the official day of Easter. This Sunday is the fourth Sunday in the Easter Season and it gives me cause for the following reflection. This fourth Sunday is unofficially known as Good Shepherd Sunday because in all three cycles of readings the Good Shepherd is mentioned. My dog, Nora, is a Border Collie. Border Collies in addition to being very smart and great Frisbee players are sheep herders. Nora is obviously growing older by the minute. I rescued her from a rescue group and we think she is about thirteen years old. I don’t know if she ever played Frisbee. She certainly doesn’t care for it now but I do know that she has been an experienced herder. Just before I got her three years ago, she was herding cattle with two other Border Collies at the adoptive home where she was staying. Her age and arthritis prevent her now from using her once finely tuned instincts. As herding dogs, Border Collies will nip at the heels of cattle or sheep or whatever they are herding to get the other animal to move together with all the other animals, to keep them in line and to be sure that they get to where they are supposed to go. They do this without hurting the other animals and under the diligence and care of the Border Collie, the sheep cannot get lost. I don’t know if Jesus, the Good Shepherd, had a Border Collie but as the shepherd of the flock he takes the lead and the sheep follow him. They know his voice and he knows their voices and there is no snatching the sheep out of his hand or away from his care. In these ways, like the Border Collie, the Good Shepherd leads the flock together and keeps them in line and makes sure that we will get to where we are supposed to go, safe and sound. As we continue to celebrate the joy of these fifty days and especially since we are at the half-way marker, what nipping or tugging at our heels are we experiencing from our Good Shepherd so that we can move together as church in the direction of the resurrection of Jesus? Are we being asked to move deeper into a faith relationship with the Lord? Are we being asked to move together and stay together with Christ’s gift of Easter peace and forgiveness? How does the Risen One herd us into life with God and each other? What nipping, tugging, caring, protecting, holding, and leading will the Good Shepherd give us in our planning for the future? Move us, O Good Shepherd, with the very life that has moved you to lay down your life so that others may live. May your way of selfless giving forever nip at our heels! Amen. Harvard University Announcement No tuition and no student loans Harvard University announced over the weekend that from now on undergraduate students from low-income families will pay no tuition. In making the announcement, Harvard's president Lawrence H. Summers said, "When only ten percent of the students in elite higher education come from families in the lower half of the income distribution, we are not doing enough. We are not doing enough in bringing elite higher education to the lower half of the income distribution." If you know of a family earning less than $60,000 a year with an honor student graduating from high school soon, Harvard University wants to pay the tuition. The prestigious university recently announced that from now on undergraduate students from lowincome families can go to Harvard for free... no tuition and no student loans!
