Graduate Certificate in Composition Studies

Application Process
We are pleased with your interest in our graduate certificate program. As you begin the
application for admission process, we wish to ensure that you are familiar with the
minimum requirements for admission to graduate certificate study in English. It is
important to recognize that although satisfaction of these basic requirements does not
guarantee graduate admission, failure to satisfy these requirements may lead to automatic
denial of admission.
Applications
There are two applications to complete:

Program Application: Complete and return the application below with statement
of purpose (see details below) and submit it with your supporting materials to the
Office of Graduate Composition Studies at edhelton@iue.edu.

Indiana University Admission: Complete the online application for graduate
status within Indiana University. The application can be found at the following:
https://onestart.iu.edu/sisad-prd/p/Guest.do?methodToCall=start&inst=IUEAA&career=GRAD
There is a small application fee required.
Supporting Documents
Additional documents are required to support the program application. Supporting
documents should be emailed to the Office of Graduate Composition Studies at
edhelton@iue.edu directly with subject line Office of Graduate Composition Studies.
Supporting documents include the following:

Statement of Purpose: A statement of 200-300 words focused on your purpose
for undertaking or continuing graduate study, your reasons for wanting to study at
Indiana University East, and your research interests, professional plans, and
career goals. You also may explain any special circumstances applicable to your
background and elaborate on your scholarly publications, awards, achievements,
abilities, and/or professional history.

Transcripts: You must submit an official transcript to show receipt of a
baccalaureate degree. If a transcript is not in English, you must provide an
official English translation certified by the college or university. An official
transcript bears the original signature of the registrar and/or the original seal of
the issuing institution. Send the transcript to the program yourself along with
your other application materials. The transcripts can be sent through email or in
an envelope sealed by the registrar. Transcripts cannot be returned. Again, you
may send transcripts through email or regular mail.
Admission Decisions

Applications and all supporting documentation are collected year round. Decisions are
made throughout the year but no later than the following the suggested due dates for
materials detailed below:

Applicant will be considered once all the required materials have been received.
Graduate Certificate Basic Requirements
 Undergraduate Cumulative Grade Point Average: 3.0 or equivalent required.
Additional International Applicant Requirements:
 TOEFL for Non-Native English Speakers:
Minimum Internet-Based Test (IBT) Overall Score Required: 70
With the following minimum section requirements:
Reading: 17
Listening: 12
Speaking: 25
Writing: 17
 IELTS (Academic Module):
An alternative to the TOEFL, scores of 5.5 or higher will be accepted
